Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between oral health literacy(OHL), oral healthstatus, and oral health behavior of independent elderly.
Methods: Cross-sectional study involved 195 independent living elderly in Depok aged 60 and above. The subjects completed a self-administered questionnaire collectin information about socio-demographics, Health Literacy in Dentistry (HeLD-29) questionnaire to assessed oral health literacy, and oral health behavior questionnaire by interviewing subjects. Oral health status was recorded by clinical oral examination using DMF-T index, CPI-modified, denture status, OHI-S, and the masticatory performance wasassessed subjectively.
Results: Oral health literacy mean score in this study is 3,45±0,67. The Cronbachs alpha = 0.945. The discriminant validity were confirmed by HeLD scores being significantly associated with mastication ability(p<0.01). The convergent validity were confirmed by HeLD score being significantly associated with amount of tooth loss, DMF-T score, and mastication ability (p<0,01) also with amount of filled teeth (p<0,05). There were correlations between some HeLD-29 domain with oral health status. There were significant differences of amount of tooth loss (M-T), amount of filled teeth (F-T), and amount of deep pocket between the group with low oral health literacy and the group with high oral health literacy (p<0,05). Statistical differences were also found between oral health literacy mean score amongst age and education level group. There were also correlations between DMF-T score and dental visits and between amount of bleeding on probing and smoking status of the subjects.
Conclusion: Oral health literacy was associated with oral health status and the socio-demographics such as age and education level there is a relationship between oral health status and oral health behavior in independent elderly.

Background: Oral hygiene of students in Islamic boarding schools is still relatively low. Behavior change techniques refer to specific strategies used in interventions to promote behavior change. This study aims to investigate the role of dental and oral health education interventions on dental hygiene using the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation for Behavior Change (COM-B) model theory approach among students in Islamic boarding schools.
Method: A total of 88 students in the boarding school were divided into two groups. Group 1 received standard dental health education interventions, and Group 2 received dental health interventions using the COM-B model approach. The components of capability, opportunity, and motivation related to maintaining dental and oral health, as well as knowledge related to dental and oral hygiene care, were evaluated using questionnaires before and after the intervention. Dental and oral hygiene status was assessed using the OHI-S and GI indexes before and after the intervention.
Results: There were significant changes in behavior and knowledge of dental and oral hygiene among students in all intervention groups. The components of capability, opportunity, and motivation showed significant and more effective results in the intervention group using the COM-B model. The oral hygiene status assessed by the OHI-S and GI indexes showed significant results in the intervention with the COM-B model.
Conclusion: Dental health education interventions using the COM-B model can effectively improve the dental and oral hygiene of students. Assessing the capability, opportunity, and motivation of students has proven to increase scores in knowledge and behavior regarding dental and oral hygiene and improve OHI-S and GI scores before and after dental health education interventions.

"Objective: This study aimed to determine the level of oral health literacy and behavior among health sciences university students. Methods: The method used descriptive cross-sectional survey involving 609 students from Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences in the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Oral health literacy level and behaviour was assessed with a validated and pretested self administered questionnaire using the Newest Vital Sign (NVS) tool and modified Oral Health Adult Literacy Questionnaire (OHL-AQ). Results: A
total of 509 participants involved in the study (83.6%). The overall mean oral health literacy score was 10.27 (95% CI 7.92, 12.62), which found dental students showing statistically significant higher scores (mean=11.36, 95% CI 9.70, 13.02) compared to medical (mean=10.72, 95% CI 8.67, 12.77), allied health sciences (mean=9.89, 95% CI 7.34, 12.44) and pharmacy (mean=9.55, 95% CI 7.23, 11.87). Almost all respondents are non-smokers (99.8%) and non-drinkers (97.2%). Only 19.1% pay regular dental visits every 6-12months while 51.1% visit dentist only when they have dental pain. There appears to be a positive relationship between oral health literacy and oral health behavior. Conclusion: Health science university students should be provided substantial dental health education in their curriculum as they could be potential strategic partners in oral health."
