"Tesis ini membahas pertikaian etnis Hispanik-Amerika dalam konteks kasus imigran gelap Elián González dengan memperlihatkan adanya berbagai kelompok yang turut memanfaatkan kasus tersebut dalam mencapai tujuan kelompok masing-masing. Adanya upaya-upaya melindungi Elián González dari kasus imigran gelap kategori "Wet-foot" membawa konflik etnis yang menjurus pada politisasi massa. Tesis ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan metode penelitian sejarah pendekatan politikologis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa politik diskriminasi dalam kebijakan imigrasi Amerika Serikat berpotensi menimbulkan pertentangan etnis. Dalam arti lain yaitu suatu komunitas etnis yang terorganisir dengan baik dapat menjadi sebuah kekuatan politik yang dominan dalam sistem demokrasi di Amerika Serikat.

This thesis is mainly focused on the American-Hispanics ethnic disputes in the context of Elián González illegal immigrant case by showing the existence of various groups who make use of the case in achieving the goals of their respective groups. The attempts to protect the Elián González "Wet-foot" case brings ethnic conflict that leads to the mass-politization. This thesis is a qualitative research using historical methods with politics approach. The research indicates that any political discrimination in the U.S. immigration policy could potentially lead to ethnic conflict. Here the writer finds that an ethnic community that is well organized can become a dominant political force in the democratic system in the United States."

"ABSTRAKTesis ini mengkaji permasalahan rasisme dan identitas budaya Afro-Amerika dari sudut pandang Malcolm-X yang diangkat oleh sutradara Spike Lee dalam film berjudul Malcolm-X. Pengkajian ini dilakukan untuk mendeskripsikan rasisme, prejudice, diskriminasi dan krisis identitas budaya masyarakat kulit hitam sebagai permasalahan utama masyarakat Amerika pada tahun 1960an yang dianalis oleh Spike Lee melalui filmnya, Malcolm-X. Penulis menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan mise-en-scene dengan memperlakukan film sebagai teks yang kemudian dianalisis berdasarkan pada teks-konteksnya. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa rasisme tetap ada karena terpelihara oleh pandangan hidup masyarakat kulit putih dan kulit hitam sendiri yang disosialisasikan. Stereotype dan prejudice di kalangan kulit putih dan kulit hitam melahirkan mitos superioritas-inferioritas sehingga terjadi diskriminasi di Amerika Serikat. Film ini mempunyai pesan agar masyarakat kulit hitam menguatkan jati diri mereka sebagai komunitas kulit hitam dengan konsep cultural pluralism, dan mendorong masyarakat kulit hitam untuk melihat Malcolm-X sebagai salah satu contoh identitas budaya Afro-Amerika.

ABSTRACTThis study investigates the problems of racism and cultural identity crisis of Afro-American people shown in the movie entitled Malcolm-X which was directed by Spike Lee. The aims of this study are to describe common problems in America in the1960s such as: racism, prejudice, discrimination, and cultural identity crises analyzed by Spike Lee through his film, Malcolm-X. Qualitative method and mise-en-scene concept were employed to analyze shots and dialogs in the movie. The study shows that racism exists due to society’s view and it has been socialized among them. Stereotype and prejudice produced the concept of superiority-inferiority, as they become the reason of discrimination in America. This movie suggests that black Americans try to strengthen their identity by using cultural pluralism’s concept and Spike Lee, the director, tries to expose Malcolm-X as one of Afro-American figures."

"Tesis ini membahas tentang konsep double consciousness untuk melihat krisis identitas rasial yang dialami remaja kulit hitam di Amerika era post-racial, yang direpresentasikan dalam film Dear White People. Dalam tesis ini, analisis mengenai double consciousness dilakukan berdasarkan aspek krisis identitas yang dialami tokoh utama, yaitu dalam hal penampilan fisik, posisi diri di antara mahasiswa lain, hubungan romantis antar karakter, dan kesenjangan generasi.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa double consciousness masih dialami oleh kaum kulit hitam tetapi dalam konteks yang berbeda dengan konsep awal yang dikemukakan DuBois di tahun 1900-an. Selain itu, krisis identitas yang dialami oleh para remaja kulit hitam terjadi karena mereka dipaksa untuk melihat diri dari sudut pandang orang kulit putih ketika mencoba untuk mengartikulasikan identitas rasial mereka sebagai kaum kulit hitam.

This thesis focuses on the concept of double consciousness to analyze how the racial identity crisis is experienced by African-American youth in the United States in the post-racial era, as represented in Dear White People film. In this thesis, an analysis of double consciousness is based on some identity crisis aspects experienced by the main characters, which are physical appearance, how the characters position themselves among other students, romantic relationship, and generation gap.

The findings indicate that the concept of double consciousness is still experienced by African-American but in a different context compared to the original concept proposed by DuBois in 1903s. Furthermore, the identity crisis that emerged as the effect of double consciousness experienced by African-American youth occurs because they are forced to see themselves from the white people point of view while they are trying to articulate their own racial identity as blacks"

Permasalahan penelitian yang diangkat adalah pengaruh budaya jurnalisme era 1990an dari Amerika Serikat yang diterjemahkan menjadi bentuk jurnalisme dengan konteks berbeda oleh redaksi Harian Republika. Penelitian dengan konsep paradigma dan hegemoni dalam ranah sosiologi media ini membahas budaya kebebasan berpendapat dan kompetisi di jurnalisme AS yang diterjemahkan berbeda oleh redaksi Harian Republika. Pengumpulan data melalui metode literatur dan wawancara. Data-data penelitian dianalisa menggunakan teori media framing dan analisis konten. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bagaimana budaya jurnalisme Amerika Serikat era 1990an dapat melatarbelakangi proses penentuan headline utama Harian Republika tentang bencana kabut asap dalam kurun waktu 1-30 September 2015

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses the influence of U.S. journalism culture in 90s towards the headline of daily newspaper Republika about fog incident in September 2015. The focus of this research problem is the influence of U.S. journalism culture in 90s toward the process to make the Republika?s headline about fog incident in September 2015. Collecting data of this study using literature and interview method. These data will be analyzed using the media framing theory and the content analysis theory. The results show how the U.S. journalism culture in 90s could influences the process of fog incident?s headline making in daily newspaper Republika in September 2015. The journalism culture can influence the character of Indonesia journalists through democratization process since the Internet Highway Booming. In some third countries, the U.S. journalism culture could make a media homogenization that standardized by internet technology development. Meanwhile,Republika that representing one of media in Indonesia, could create a media diversity and could more strengthen the media ideology."
