"ABSTRACTPlastik merupakan sebuah benda sekaligus material yang dapat dengan mudah ditemukan dalam kehidupan seharihari. Pada umumnya plastik hanya digunakan untuk fungsi yang tidak lama, namun sejatinya plastik memiliki jangka waktu hidup yang cukup panjang. Plastik dapat menjadi permasalahan lingkungan jika setelah selesai masa pemakaian tidak ditangani dengan bijak karena karakteristik plastik yang cenderung sulit dicerna kembali oleh bumi. Maka recycle dihadirkan sebagai salah satu cara yang dapat memberi plastik bekas pakai kesempatan hidup kedua. Recycle dapat mengalami downcycle; yaitu terjadinya penurunan nilai suatu benda atau material setelah dilakukan recycle, atau upcycle; yaitu adanya kenaikan nilai suatu benda atau material setelah dilakukan recycle. Salah satu upaya untuk membuat recycle plastik menjadi upcycle plastik adalah dengan menjadikan plastik bekas pakai sebuah benda yang mempunyai fungsi lebih besar, krusial, dan dipakai dalam jangka waktu yang panjang seperti pengaplikasian dalam bangunan sebagai elemen struktur. Plastik bekas pakai dapat dipakai menjadi material elemen struktur selama dapat memenuhi sifat yang dibutuhkan oleh material struktur pada umumnya yaitu sifat brittle dan ductile. Material plastik bekas pakai yang mengalami upcycle menjadi material elemen struktur diterapkan pada rumah plastik Conceptos Pl sticos di Kolombia dan jembatan plastik Sungai Tweed, Skotlandia. Agar dapat memenuhi sifat brittle dan ductile yang dibutuhkan oleh struktur, jenis plastik yang dipakai harus merupakan campuran dari beberapa jenis plastik. Kedua struktur tersebut menggunakan sistem struktur non-form active karena saat ini eksplorasi terhadap plastik bekas pakai yang didaur ulang menjadi elemen struktur masih terbatas pada struktur yang sederhana.

ABSTRACTPlastic is a material that we could easily find on daily basis. Plastic usually only being used for a short period time but plastic actually can last for a long time. Plastic could be a problem for environment if it is not being handled properly after its use, because plastic couldn rsquo t degrade easily in biosphere. To solve the problem, recycle is done as a way to give used plastic a second life chance. Used plastic that have been through recycle process could be considered as downcycle object rsquo s or material rsquo s decreasing value occurred after recycling, or upcycle object rsquo s or material rsquo s rising value occurred after recycling, depending of what it becomes. An effort to make recycled plastic becomes an upcycled plastic is to make the used plastic have a bigger, more crucial, and longer living function than it was before, such as application in buildings as a structural element. Used plastic could be applied as material for structural element in building as long as it fulfill structural material behavior that is brittle and ductile. Used plastic that has been upcycled as structural element could be seen in Conceptos Pl sticos rsquo s House in Colombia and Plastic Bridge above Tweed River, Scotland. To fulfill material behavior that a structure should have that is brittle and ductile, used plastic that is going to be used must be a mixture from several kinds of used plastics. Both structure in the precedent only used non form active structural system because for now the exploration that had been done are still limited to simple structural systems."

"Sampah plastik menjadi salah satu masalah lingkungan global yang perlu segera ditangani. Saat ini, telah banyak bermunculan gerakan untuk mengatasi masalah sampah plastik. Salah satu diantaranya adalah gerakan green dengan fokus daur ulang material. Namun, proses daur ulang material juga perlu memperhatikan nilai pada barang, agar barang tersebut juga mengalami upcycle. Saat ini, telah muncul sebuah gerakan mendaur ulang sampah plastik menjadi ecobrick. Ecobric adalah bata plastik yang terbuat dari PET yang dapat digunakan sebagai alternatif material bangunan. Namun, belum diketahui apakah penggunaan ecobrick sebagai material bangunan merupakan suatu proses upcycle dan apakah ecobrick dapat menjadi solusi yang tepat untuk mengatasi masalah sampah plastik. Pada tulisan ini dilakukan analisis terhadap nilai upcycle dari ecobrick dan membandingkannya dengan metode daur ulang plastik konvensional. Hasil dari analisis tersebut menyatakan bahwa ecobrick sebagai material bangunan mengalami proses upcycle dan memiliki nilai upcycle yang lebih baik daripada metode daur ulang plastik konvensional. Selain itu, ecobrick juga berpotensi untuk dapat mengatasi permasalahan sampah plastik dan juga dapat menekan jumlah konsumsi energi dan produksi emisi.

Plastic waste has become one of the global environmental problems that need to be addressed immediately. In the moment, there have been many movements aimed to overcome plastic waste problems. One of them is the green movement with a focus on material recycling. However, the recycling process also needs to focus on the value of the product, so that the product upcycled. Nowadays, there is a movement to recycle plastic waste into ecobrick. Ecobrick is a plastic brick made from PET that can be used as an alternative building material. However, it is not yet known whether the use of ecobrick as a building material is upcycled and whether ecobrick can become the right solution to overcome plastic waste problem. To find out about this, it is necessary to analyze the upcycle value of the ecobrick and to compare it with the conventional plastic recycling methods. The results of the analysis prove that ecobrick as a building material is upcycled and has a better upcycle value than the conventional plastic recycling methods. Furthermore, ecobrick also has the potential to overcome the plastic waste problem and also can reduce the amount of energy consumption and production of emissions."
