A number of previous studies have shown that Souad Al-Sabah is an Arab female poet who often raises social issues as themes of her poetry, such as economy, worker's welfare, nationalism, to feminism that voice women's rights over discrimination that occurs in her country, Kuwait. However, researchers also found Souad's poems with the theme of love. This research examines two of Souad Al-Sabah's poems entitled Mu'adalat and Al-Mutafawwiqah. This study aims to describe the inner-outer structures of the poems as well as describe the types of loved themes that contained in the two poems. Structuralism theory is used to analyze the inner-outer structures and the relationship between the two elements while the conceptual metaphor theory is used to describe the meaning of the two poems. Theories about ghazals and patriotism are used to identify the types of love themes contained in the poetry. The method used in this study is qualitative method. The results of this study founds that there are several love themes in two poems by Souad Al-Sabah entitled Mu'adalat and Al-Mutafawwiqah. Based on the structural analysis, it was found that Mu'adalat has a more complex structure, while Al-Mutafawwiqah is simpler so the message is more easily received by readers. It was also found that there are two concepts of love in Souad's work, first one is love in Staub's concept of constructive patriotism and the second is type of love contained in the 'uzri ghazals."

ABSTRAKThis article traces the major contestations that have taken place in Sabah and Sarawak throughout the 54 years of their independence. The two major areas of contestation are state power and local resources, pitting federal leaders against Sabah and Sarawaks elites. These contestations have forced the federal government to accommodate the local elites, thus ensuring the stability of Barisan Nasional (BN) rule in the East Malaysian states. However, Sabah and Sarawak elites are not homogeneous since they have different degrees of power, agendas, and aspirations. These differences have led to open feuds between the elites, resulting in the collapse of political parties and the formation of new political alignments. Over almost four decades, a great majority of the people in Sabah and Sarawak have acceded to BN rule. However, in the last decade there have been pockets of resistance against the authoritarian rule of BN and the local elites. This article argues that without accountability and a system of checks and balances, the demand for more autonomy by the increasingly vocal Sabah and Sarawak elites will benefit only them and not the general public."

This research aims to explain why security cooperation can be successfully carried out and effectively run despite the sensitivities between the cooperating countries. This can be observed in the Trilateral Cooperative Arrangement (TCA) in the Sulu Sea in 2016, which effectively reduced security threats in the Sulu Sea despite the Sabah territorial dispute between Malaysia and the Philippines. In 2016, President Rodrigo Duterte's claim to the Sabah region reignited tension between Malaysia and the Philippines. But at the same time, the threat in the Sulu Sea from transnational crime was increasing. By applying the theory of cooperation under anarchy, this research demonstrates that cooperation between Malaysia and the Philippines is feasible due to three key factors: both Malaysia and the Philippines have a mutuality of interest in the Sulu Sea, they are concerned about future security threats, and numbers of actors involved and partner selection. Through a qualitative approach and causal-process tracing method, this research found that these three factors led Malaysia and the Philippines to prioritize addressing security threats in the Sulu Sea, considering it a paramount concern. As a result, the two countries prioritize forging a cooperative agreement over the issue of the Sabah dispute."

"This is a preliminary description of the Malay variety used as a lingua franca in the Malaysian state of Sabah at the northernmost top of Borneo. The paper discusses a number of common linguistic features that distinguish Sabah Malay from other Malay varieties and analyses these features from a historical linguistic perspective. While it is argued that Sabah Malay has a close historical relation with other Malay dialects spoken in Borneo, especially Brunei Malay, the vernacular is also influenced phonologically and lexically by Sabah?s indigenous and immigrant speech communities. Words and sentences recorded or elicited during fieldwork in various parts of Sabah illustrate these points."
