"The 1970's and 1980's witnessed both substantial conceptual and practical interest in paratransit across Europe and North America, as well as widespread implementation of paratransit services and strategies. Subsequently, the trajectory of paratransit (also often referred to as flexible transport systems) has waned, to the point where it is frequently relegated to a very narrow niche (often related to special needs) in the spectrum of collective transport services. More recently, technological advances have made feasible new and / or improved approaches for organizing and delivering local passenger transportation. With practice, policy and research in paratransit now being impacted by these developments, a new set of possibilities is emerging. Some practitioners have forged ahead over the past decade and implemented services and organizational models that show the way forward for what is possible, sometimes without the benefit of the most advanced available technologies. This book draws on a selection of papers presented at the International Paratransit Conference in Monterey in October 2014 to capture these exciting developments."

"Cities in developing countries are facing intertwined urban mobility challenges: urban sprawl and traffic jam.Having not enough reliable and standardized public transport supply means the residents are forced to opt for traveling by private vehicles such as cars or motorcycles. There is a swell of tailpipe emission and economic losses due to traffic jam. Overcoming urban sprawl and at the same time building massive public transport is not an easy feat to accomplish, as both require immense investments and years of construction. Therefore, citiesmust have innovative plans to increase public-transport coverage and articulate density through paratransit formalization & digitalization, demand management, and land consolidation."

Congestion is a problem that occurs in major cities of the world. DKI Jakarta as the capital city suffers up to IDR 65 trillion per year due to traffic jams. To overcome this, the Government issued a Presidential Decree no. 55 of 2018 about Greater Jakarta Transportation Master Plan (RITJ). The decree targets entire urban transportation system based on mass public transportation to be integrated so that its use can reach 60% by 2029. To support this policy, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government launched the Jaklingko program, which is an effort to integrate physical, management and payment aspects of all modes of transportation mode in Jakarta area. One of the modes integrated in the JakLingko program is Angkutan Kota, a paratransit mode that has been operating informally for 40 years. This study aims to examine the impact of the integration of urban transportation services on the number of Transjakarta passengers. In addition, this study also examine the substitution or complementary relationship that occurs when urban transportation services are integrated with Transjakarta. The test was carried out using a random effect regression method using daily data on the number of Microtrans passengers and the main Transjakarta corridor during January 2018 to December 2019 in DKI Jakarta Province. This study found statistically significant evidence that every integration of microtrans with the main Transjakarta corridor will increase the number of passengers by 0.71% in that corridor. This proves that the integration of the microtrans service as a feeder is going according to plan because it is complementary to the main Transjakarta corridor service."
