Jarak kelahiran yang optimal merupakan faktor penting dalam peningkatan kesehatan ibu dan bayi. Jarak kelahiran yang optimal dapat dicapai dengan menggunakan kontrasepsi. Persentase penggunaan kontrasepsi di Indonesia mencapai 59,7%, namun di Papua hanya mencapai persentase 19,8% dan merupakan provinsi dengan prevalensi penggunaan kontrasepsi yang terendah. Bahkan, persentase penggunaan kontrasepsi di Papua menurun pada tahun 2013 jika dibandingkan dengan tahun 2010.
