"SEB'11 formed a welcome opportunity for researchers in subjects related to sustainability, renewable energy technology, and applications in the built environment to mix with other scientists, industrialists and stakeholders in the field.
The conference featured presentations on a range of renewable energy and sustainability related topics. In addition the conference explored two innovative themes : the application of intelligent sensing, control, optimisation and modelling techniques to sustainability and the technology of sustainable buildings.
These two themes combine synergetically to address issues relating to the intelligent building."

"This book explains how society will face an energy crisis in the coming decades owing to increasing scarcity of fossil fuels and climate change impacts. It carefully explores this coming crisis and concisely examines all of the major technologies related to energy production (fossil fuels, renewables, and nuclear) and their impacts on our society and environment. The author argues that it is wrong to pit alternatives to fossil fuels against each other and proposes that nuclear energy, although by no means free of problems, can be a viable source of reliable and carbon-free electricity. He concludes by calling for a diversified and rational mix of electricity generation in order to mitigate the effects of the energy crisis. Throughout, the book is spiced with science, history, and anecdotes in a way that ensures rewarding reading without loss of rigor."

"A collection of more than one hundred papers is included, addressing the three thematic areas experimental, including advances in testing techniques and soil behaviour, modelling, covering theoretical and constitutive issues together with numerical and physical modelling, and engineering, focusing on approaches, case histories and geo-environmental themes. The areas of application of the papers embrace most of the geotechnical problems related to unsaturated soils. Increasing interest in geo-environmental problems, including chemical coupling, marks new perspectives in unsaturated soil mechanics."

"What emits more radioactivity into the atmosphere: a nuclear power plant or a thermal power plant? A thermal power station. What entails greater risk: to live near a nuclear power plant or smoke a cigarette? Smoking one cigarette is equivalent to the risk of living two years near a nuclear power plant. What is being done in a rush hour of energy demand if the wind blows? Is used in pumping systems or central gas reserve. The electricity can not be stored. How many wind turbines are used to replace a nuclear power plant? About two thousand, the last generation. Separated from each of the five hundred meters necessary because they are efficient and the row of mills would extend from Barcelona to Geneva, crossing the whole of France. It is a mistake to oppose each other alternative energies, it would make more sense to consider them allies in a great battle against the Dark Lord more powerful every day : climate change, which could very well destroy, within one or two centuries, our beloved and battered globalized region."

"The importance of biogas energy has risen manifold and has become universal. This is due to the realization that biogas capture and utilization has great potential in controlling global warming. By capturing biogas wherever it is formed, we not only tap a source of clean energy, but we also prevent the escape of methane to the atmosphere. Given that methane has 25 times greater global warming potential than CO2, methane capture through biogas energy in this manner can contribute substantially towards global warming control."

"Life-cycle assessment of semiconductors presents the first and thus far only available transparent and complete life cycle assessment of semiconductor devices. A lack of reliable semiconductor LCA data has been a major challenge to evaluation of the potential environmental benefits of information technologies (IT). The analysis and results presented in this book will allow a higher degree of confidence and certainty in decisions concerning the use of IT in efforts to reduce climate change and other environmental effects. Coverage includes but is not limited to semiconductor manufacturing trends by product type and geography, unique coverage of life-cycle assessment, with a focus on uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of energy and global warming missions for CMOS logic devices, life cycle assessment of flash memory and life cycle assessment of DRAM. "Control of solar energy systems details the main solar energy systems, problems involved with their control, and how control systems can help in increasing their efficiency. Thermal energy systems are explored in depth, as are photovoltaic generation and other solar energy applications such as solar furnaces and solar refrigeration systems. This second and updated edition of advanced control of solar plants includes new material on, solar towers and solar tracking, heliostat calibration, characterization and offset correction, solar radiation, estimation, prediction, and computation, and integrated control of solar plants. This new edition contains worked examples in the text as well as proposed exercises and simulation models."

"Offshore wind energy cost modeling provides a methodological framework to assess installation and decommissioning costs, and using examples from the European experience, provides a broad review of existing processes and systems used in the offshore wind industry. This book a step-by-step guide to modeling costs over four sections. These sections cover, background and introductory material, installation processes and vessel requirements, installation cost estimation, and decommissioning methods and cost estimation. This self-contained and detailed treatment of the key principles in offshore wind development is supported throughout by visual aids and data tables. Offshore wind wnergy cost modeling is a key resource for anyone interested in the offshore wind industry, particularly those interested in the technical and economic aspects of installation and decommissioning. The book provides a reliable point of reference for industry practitioners and policy makers developing generalizable installation or decommissioning cost estimates."

This study aims to contribute to the understanding of renewable electricity development in Indonesia by examining the impact of financial development and FDI on renewable electricity production. Given the global challenges of climate change and the imperative to transition to sustainable energy sources, Indonesia's role as a major energy consumer in Southeast Asia becomes crucial in achieving global renewable energy targets. Using annual frequency data from 1981 to 2021, we analyze the role of the expanding financial sector and FDI in the renewable electricity production in Indonesia. We examine various financial development variables, including domestic credit to the private sector, domestic credit from the banking sector and stock market capitalization. Employing the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach with a structural break, we enrich the existing literature in this field. The cointegration analysis reveals significant long-run positive relationships between domestic credit to the private sector, domestic credit from banking sector, stock market capitalization, and FDI with the renewable electricity production in Indonesia. Based on these empirical findings, this study underscores the crucial role of financial and investment support in the expansion of renewable electricity. Therefore, decision-makers should prioritize the development of the financial sector as a policy measure to enhance access to finance for investors in Indonesian renewable energy projects."
