Permintaan pasar akan batik semakin meningkat tajam semenjak tahun 2009, dimana UNESCO menetapkan batik sebagai warisan tak berwujud dari Indonesia untuk dunia. Pabrik penghasil batik semakin giat memperbanyak produksi namun memperkecil biaya produksi dengan beralih ke pewarna sintetis yang limbahnya mempunyai dampak buruk bagi lingkungan jika dibuang sembarangan.
