Hashima (Gunkanjima) was successfully listed as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2015. The listing process of this island had received strong rejection from South Korea because Japan did not include its full history of forced labor for South Korean and Chinese citizens. Based on data from the Nagasaki government, Hashima experienced a surge in visitors of more than one hundred thousand tourists after its name was listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. Previously, Hashima was only known for its dark tourism as a ghost island, but now it is increasingly attracting tourists with a different image after the UNESCO listing and the construction of new supporting tourist sites such as the Gunkanjima Digital Museum. This research discusses the dark tourism of Hashima and its related locations as well as any changes that occurred after being registered at UNESCO. The results of this study found positive impacts such as the surge and stability of tourist visits to Hashima, and negative impacts such as sanitation efforts by covering up the dark history of Hashima by the Japanese government. In addition, this study also found a shift in the dark tourism spectrum behind the success of increasing tourism visits in Hashima and its related locations."

"The book examines the extent to which Coser's (1956) 16 propositions can apply to tourism impact studies and, where possible, to enhance, deepen and challenge the original theory, using evidence from communities in China that differ from the context used by Coser. The combination of ethnographic description and sociologically-oriented analysis, drawing upon both Chinese and western paradigms that are, at times very different in their underlying value system, challenges several of Coser's suppositions. The book will also draw upon subsequent publications by the authors, both severally and separately. These publications have utilised different concepts and paradigms, including for example the use of Valene Smith's concept of the "culture broker" and Turner's concepts of marginalised peoples, and the paradigms of constructionism and interpretive research work used in other studies by the authors. The sum of the work, it is suggested, adds to our canon of knowledge about social conflict in tourismdevelopment as well as impacts of tourism on disadvantaged ethniccommunities in China. "
