"In this article, the author argues for the inappropriateness of the government's policy and approach in its efforts to 'develop' the indigenous people who have been categorized as 'masyarakat terasing'. Through his analysis on the program of Pembinaan Kesejahteraan Masyarakat Terasing (PKMT), the author assumes that the program has failed. He examines the failure by looking closely at the livelihood of Orang Laut in Indragiri Hilir, the fishermen, who used to live collectively along the seashore and spend most of their time in boats. They refused to stay in the resettlement village which was provided by the government who did not base its program on the social-cultural-economic reality."

This article aims to explore the activities of storing and storage in the living space of the Orang Laut from the perspective of everyday life, as the tactics carried out in such a limited space. In such a limited space, Orang Laut uses its sampan to carry equipment for their daily needs away from the land. The writing of this article studies the activities of storing and storage that occur as part of interiority within the vernacular context of Orang Laut. The observation was carried out through literature studies and field study in June - July 2019 in the “Ekskursi Arsitektur UI 2019: Orang Laut” in the Tajur Biru, Lingga, Riau Islands. The fingdings of this study suggest that they store their everyday stuff and the equipment tactically based on the needs of each activity, constituting a storage pattern based on the intensity of use, size, and zoning of wet and dry area, both vertically and horizontally with turns in time."

Generalized standard of living, a by-product of the Scarcity-Abundance cycle, stripped humans off their local ties and contextual lifestyle, pushed us to the nothing end of the continuum, and finally shaping the concept scarcity itself. With that point of view, this thesis emphasizes the theme scarcity of contextual living, with Riau archipelago`s Sea Nomads (Orang Laut) as the main actor of the research. Historically a nomadic turned into semi-nomadic community through intercultural interactions, Orang Laut have been adopting a few domestic activities through assimilation during trading. Cleaning themselves with mass-produced chemical toiletries and washing their clothes with detergents have damaged Orang Laut's living environment. By dissecting the essences of their kajang woven to be used as a method of responding
the phenomenon, this final project aims to weave Orang Laut`s assimilated domestic activities with their environmental value through the application of compact sampan kajang lifestyle and maximizing the potential of existing natural resources to diminish chemical waste from Orang Laut`s domestic activities.

"Southeast Asia is home to many distinct groups of sea nomads, some of which
are known collectively as Orang (Suku) Laut. Those located between Sumatra and
the Malay Peninsula are all Malayic-speaking. Information about their speech is
paltry and scattered; while starting points are provided in publications such as
Skeat and Blagden (1906), Kähler (1946a, b, 1960), Sopher (1977: 178?180), Kadir
et al. (1986), Stokhof (1987), and Collins (1988, 1995), a comprehensive account
and description of Malayic Sea Tribe lects has not been provided to date. This
study brings together disparate sources, including a bit of original research, to
sketch a unified linguistic picture and point the way for further investigation.
While much is still unknown, this paper demonstrates relationships within and
between individual Sea Tribe varieties and neighbouring canonical Malay lects.
It is proposed that Sea Tribe lects can be assigned to four groupings: Kedah, Riau
Islands, Duano, and Sekak."
