"As societies become more complex and interconnected, the global risk for catastrophic disasters is increasing. Demand for expertise to mitigate the human suffering and damage these events cause is also high. A new field of disaster medicine is emerging, offering innovative approaches to optimize disaster management. Much of the information needed to create the foundation for this growing specialty is not objectively described or is scattered among multiple different sources. This definitive work brings together a coherent and comprehensive collection of scientific observations and evidence-based recommendations with expert contributors from around the globe. This book identifies essential subject matter, clarifies nomenclature, and outlines necessary areas of proficiency for healthcare professionals handling mass casualty crises. It also describes in-depth strategies for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of victims suffering from blast injuries or exposure to chemical, biological, and radiological agents"

"The causes and behavioral consequences of disasters brings a public health perspective to the literature, reflecting the increasing importance of the field in both disaster preparedness and disaster response. Arguing that a disaster is not only the event but its aftermath as well, the authors apply salient local content to the study of scenarios ranging from the Cuzco, Peru, earthquake of 1950 to the Columbine school shooting, the Oklahoma City bombing, and 9/11. These case studies form the basis for models of vulnerabilities to disasters and population behavior following disasters, illustrating how careful pre-event planning and coordinated post-event response strategies can minimize the initial damage and negative aftereffects."

Regional disaster planning is a document that aims to reduce the risk due to disaster impacts. This study mainly focuses on household disaster preparedness activities in Indonesia in implementing disaster risk reduction as an effort on disaster coping. This becomes important because Indonesia is a disaster-prone area. The purpose of our analysis is to look at the effect of RPBs at the district/city level on disaster preparedness with regional coverage of household disaster early warning knowledge and participation in training or disaster rescue simulations as a proxy. This study uses a combination of Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression and propensity score matching (PSM). The results showed the regional RPB was able to provide an positive difference in the supply of household disaster preparedness."
