This thesis discusses newspaper journalists in dealing with changes in the work environment as a result of the application of digital technology by their companies. The adoption of digital technology by media companies often creates tension between journalists and management. This thesis observes that the changes in the work environment experienced by journalists cannot be separated from their position in the journalistic arena which is currently dominated by digital capitalism. Jonathan Pace (2013) defines digital capitalism as a cross between the structural tendencies of capitalism and digital processes. According to him, digital capitalism is a collection of processes, sites and / or moments, where digital technology mediates the structural tendency of capitalism, namely capital accumulation. Thus, this research sees journalists in two opposing social relations, namely journalists as agents who are subject to economic power relations, where they are fully viewed as commodities and journalists as agents who carry out their roles, realizing their potential in the journalistic arena, the arena which has its own values, principles, and ways of playing and is not entirely based on the logic of economic power. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu's Arena-Habitus-Kapital Theory to analyze journalists' contestation in the journalistic arena which is dominated by digital capitalism. The study was conducted on four subjects who are journalists. This research paradigm is a critical paradigm that sees a power relationship in the agent's social practice. The research method used is the case study method. The results obtained are trajectory or a description of the life experience of the subject where the habitus and capital are recorded. The results showed that the domination of digital capitalism in newspaper, especially in Pikiran Rakyat, took place from its involvement in exchange relations of commodity markets. The complexity that occurs from the domination of digital capitalism in "PR" manifests in its journalists' contestation as reflected in the informant of this study. In the midst of journalist contestation, the dominant class plays a decisive role through the distribution of power into the arena"

"In this edited volume, scholars from Mumbai, Bengaluru, Jakarta, Cape Town, Sao Paulo and other cities of the global South explore the complex relationship between platformization and informality through a different lens. Drawing on extensive theoretical, quantitative and qualitative scholarship, they provide both a useful overview and insights into the lived realities of gig work for platforms covering a range of skills, working conditions, and forms of algorithmic management. Platform work has attracted considerable attention from scholars in the global North, who have tended to view it as a form of casualisation of work that was previously regulated. But what about the global South, where most employment, especially that of women and migrant workers was historically already informal?
Beyond a focus on livelihoods, employment, and work, the authors show how labour platforms take on powers that bring about broader impacts, including those affecting identity and personal wellbeing. They also illustrate the impact of platformization on the governance of affected sectors by public agencies, thus affecting political power, and how public data infrastructures contribute to further platformization. The purpose of this pioneering work is to lay bare these interactions to then rebuild our understanding of platformization and its social, political, cultural and economic impacts. Its insights are attentive to gender and ethnic differences, as well as geographical ones."
