"ABSTRACTJepang dikenal sebagai salah satu negara maju di dunia. Perkembangan Jepang dalam bidang teknologi sudah tidak diragukan lagi. Kemajuan teknologi Jepang sangat memudahkan masyarakatnya dalam menjalankan kehidupan sehari-hari, oleh karena itu tidak heran jika masyarakatnya sangat bergantung dengan teknologi. Selain itu, sikap masyarakatnya yang disiplin terhadap berbagai hal pun sudah diakui dunia. Dengan letak geografis yang rawan dengan bencana alam, menjadikan masyarakat Jepang sangat siap dan memiliki sikap yang tenang ketika menghadapi bencana. Bentuk dari kesiapan masyarakat Jepang pun tidak luput dari peran teknologi. Film Survival Family karya Yaguchi Shinobu menceritakan bagaimana masyarakat Jepang dapat bertahan hidup ketika teknologi tidak dapat digunakan. Dengan membedah film ini, penulis melihat representasi masyarakat Jepang dalam menghadapi bencana ketiadaan teknologi. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif analisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori modernitas Anthony Giddens dan teori representasi Stuart Hall dan teori mise-en-scene. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah film Survival Family merepresentasikan bahwa masyarakat Jepang tidak siap menghadapi bencana ketiadaan teknologi.

The advancement of Japanese technologies greatly facilitate their people with their daily live routines which resulted to their dependence on technologies. In addition, Japanese discipline attitude towards various things has also been recognized by the world. With its geographical location being prone to natural disasters, Japanese society is very prepared and possess a calm attitude when facing disasters. These preparedness can not be separated from the role of technology. Survival Family, a movie directed by Yaguchi Shinobu, tells how Japanese people would survive when technology can not be used. The writer attemps to  examining this movie by seeing the representation of Japanese society when dealing with disasters in an environment absent of technology. This research used  descriptive analysis method, accompanied with Anthony Gidden`s modernity theory approach and Stuart Halls representation theory and the theory of mise-en-scene."
