"Penelitian ini membahas tentang keberadaan permasalahan sosiokultural yang terdapat di film In The Absence of The Sun (2014). Fokus dari riset ini adalah untuk menganalisa berbagai simbolisme yang digunakan untuk mengimplikasikan beberapa isu, salah satunya isu kesenjangan sosial di Jakarta. Riset ini kemudian juga menggarisbawahi usaha film In The Absence of The Sun dalam memperkaya representasi di media, terlihat dari keberadaan karakter-karakter LGBTQ+ di samping setting agamis kota Jakarta. Sebagai riset kualitatif, penelitian ini melakukan analisisnya menggunakan teknik mise-en-scene sembari mengaitkannya dengan Symbolic Interaction Theory. Riset ini menyimpulkan bahwa representasi yang beragam serta penggambaran Jakarta yang sangat jujur dapat mendukung peran media massa dalam menyalurkan berbagai budaya, membangun opini yang bermacam-macam di masyarakat, serta menormalisasi dan memvalidasi keberadaan orang-orang ini di kehidupan nyata. Salah satu rekomendasi untuk riset-riset mendatang adalah untuk melakukan riset comparing-and-contrasting dengan film-film Indonesia lain dengan tema yang serupa.

This paper is about the presence of sociocultural commentaries present in the movie In The Absence of The Sun (2014). The focus of the research is mainly to analyse the symbolisms used to imply certain issues--one of which being Jakarta’s prominent social gap--as well as to point out the movie’s efforts in challenging representations in media, taking into account the presence of LGBTQ+ characters alongside the city’s religious undertones. As a qualitative research, this paper chose to conduct its analysis through mise-en-scéne, whilst intertwining it with Symbolic Interaction Theory. This research concluded that blunt representation of diverse individuals and an as-is depiction of Jakarta’s urban society could reinforce mass media’s role in transmitting culture, evoking opinions, and help normalise and validates these individuals’ existence in the real world. One of the recommendations for future research is to conduct a comparing-and-contrasting research alongside other Indonesian movies with similar nuances.
