Adolescence is a critical period in an individual's growth, marked by various biological, cognitive, and socio-emotional changes. In Japan, there is a commonly used term associated with adolescence known as chūnibyō, defined as imaginative and eccentric behavior typically exhibited by teenagers in their quest for identity and independence. Chūnibyō has become part of Japanese popular culture, particularly evident in anime such as Chūbyō Gekihatsu Boy (2019). This research analyzes the representation of chūnibyō and the change in perception towards chūnibyō represented in the anime. By applying a descriptive qualitative approach, Stuart Hall's (1997) theory of representation is used to understand how this anime constructs meaning and portrays chūnibyō characters. The research argues that this anime not only portrays chūnibyō as peculiar behavior but also highlights the positive potential and contributions of chūnibyō individuals to society. Chūnibyō in this anime is also represented as a form of creative and eccentric expression that allows teenagers to explore their imaginative worlds deeply and meaningfully."

"Anime is a quintessentially Japanese form of animation consisting of both hand drawn and computer-generated imagery, and is often characterised by colourful graphics, vibrant characters, and fantastical themes. As an increasingly globalising expression of popular art and entertainment, and distributed through cinema, television, and over the internet, anime series and films have an enormous following, not only in Japan but also in Asia. This book provides a comprehensive survey of the historical development, industrial structure, and technical features of Japanese animation and of the overall dynamics of its globalisation in key contexts of the Asian region. Specific chapters cover anime’s production logics, its features as an ‘emotion industry’, and the involvement of a range of Asian countries in the production, consumption, and cultural impact of Japanese animation."
