"Era Romantisme merupakan masa kejayaan kesusastraan Prancis, karena karya-karya sastra yang penuh dengan kebebasan berekspresi dan berimajinasi. Salah satu tema yang dikenal adalah tema fantastik. Tema ini mengusung unsur-unsur irasionalitas yang ditumpahkan ke dalam cerita. Peristiwa-peristiwa yang dimunculkan cenderung mengejutkan, menakutkan, dan terkesan tidak mungkin terjadi di dunia nyata. Tema fantastik ini dapat kita temukan pada salah satu cerpen (cerita pendek) karya Guy de Maupassant, yakni, Le Horla, yang terdiri dari peristiwa-peristiwa yang seperti tidak masuk akal pikiran kita. Keunikannya adalah unsur-unsur yang ada dalam cerita membuat pembaca merasakan sensasi ketakutan yang tidak biasa. Makalah ini akan membahas bagaimana unsur-unsur fantastik tersebut ditampilkan di dalam cerpen.

Romanticism era was the heyday of French litterature, where there are litterary works that are full of expression and freedom of imagination. One theme (or genre) that is known is fantastic. This theme brings the elements of irrationality that spilled into the story. Events that appear likely shocking, frightening, and seem unlikely to happen in the real world. This fantastic theme can be found on one of the short story by Guy de Maupassant, namely, Le Horla, consisting of such events that is as absurd our minds. The uniqueness is that there are elements in the story makes the reader can experience the feel of the horror that was built by the author so that the reader felt unusual sensation of fear. This paper discusses how these fantastic elements appear in the stories."
