Sel oval merupakan sel punca tetap pada hepar dewasa, ditandai oleh OV6, yang terlibat dalam proses regenerasi. Sel oval ditemukan pada masa embrional dan memiliki kemiripan dengan hepatoblast, ditandai oleh AFP. Sel oval diduga merupakan sisa hepatoblast embrio.
