ABSTRAKTanzania has enjoyed rather peaceful political transitions both the post-colonial regime and to multiparty democracy whereas in many other African states, recurring violent civil wars and ethnic conflicts have led to tremendous human suffering. This research examines how Tanzania achieved succesful national-identity-building and national integration that brought about stability in the society and how the nationalist policies have influenced democratic development in the multiparty regime. Tanzania in the aftermath of colonization chose to follow the path to unity and equality, while it suppressed cultural diversity and individual liberty. Yet, the changes in the recent elections give hope for further democratic development in Tanzania. The nationalism trajectories shape its democratization process to be slow but peaceful. "

ABSTRAKInterviews with 22 marriage-migrant women from China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Philippines revealed that power distance in conjunction with individualis/collectivism influence their conflict styles. Moreover, women were more likely to engage in compromising style with their spouses, obliging with their in-laws, and avoiding with their spouse and in-laws when they had emotionally given up on resolving the conflict outside the home with strangers and acquaintances. Though inconclusive, the findings suggest that women's educational level, work experiences and financial status influence their conflict style. While these were cultural and social factors that influence the participants conflict style, their goal, namely, providing a better life for their children, was also found to be a major drive in resolving conflicts and in the process they empowered themselves to out win (surmount) the conflicting situations rather than being compliant. Suggestions for future studies as well as a scale for Cambodia's power distance and individualism/collectivism are suggested."

ABSTRAKWelfare systems in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan were traditionally geared towards economic growth and productivity, rather than focusing on social rights. However, with increasing social policy commitments and migratory inflows in recent years, questions of who is deserving what in redistributive terms are increasingly relevant for these welfare latecomers, as it has been the case for European welfare states. By connecting discourses on social citizenship in East Asia to broader theoritical debates, this study aims to provide some conceptual instruments for a deeper analysis of social rights in this region in the face of increasing immigration trends. it is suggested that the lack of a differentiation between the ideas of status, identity, and social rights may lead to an ethnocentric understanding of social citizenship, which ill fits with the human rights perspective."

ABSTRAKThe purpose of the present paper is to distinguish and compare several ways of articulating and defending the policy ideal of multiculturalism. It distinguishes three approaches: the culturalist approach, the domination/oppression approach, and the community rebuilding approach. After briefly looking at the former two approaches, the present paper examines the community rebuilding approach in more detail. The community rebuilding approach attracts relatively little at- tention in political theory literature, but it is nonetheless informing important policy debates and practices of multiculturalism today. Finally, the paper com- pares the merits and demerits of the three approaches, and considers the appro- priate way of articulating and applying multiculturalism in particular situations."

ABSTRAKContemporary scholarship on Jamaican-born writer and poet Claude McKay, an influential figure of the Harlem Renaissance, seems to be unanimous in approaching his work through a lens of inter- or transnationalism. Thereby, mainly two aspects are often emphasized: First, his travelers life which he has documented in his autobiography A Long Way from Home, and second his political position, traceable in both his fictional and his non-fictional publications. This essay explores a third aspect of McKays transnationalism: his politics of culture and identity. Assuming that experiences and practices of groundedness and movement go along with an understanding of the self, I analyze McKays 1928 novel Home to Harlem and argue that the built-in paradox James Clifford calls dwelling-in-travel is not only evident in the novels politics of space, but can also be traced in its politics of gender relations and his representation of race."

"Much of the past research on the sexual behavior of Indian women has characterized them as subjects of patriarchy, who are passive bodies and embrace the codified gendered values unquestioningly. In contrast, this ethnographic study explores the emergence of new sexual practices among migrant young middle class women working in transnational call centers (TNCs) in Bangalore, in the form of live-in relations. This goes against the expectations of their families that daughters should abstain from pre-marital sex, which is considered to be a non-normative and shameful practice. Drawing on theories of practice and situated reflexivity, I demonstrate how these women negotiate the ambivalences and contradictions that they experience as dutiful, respectable middle class daughters and modern sexual partners. Both ruptures and continuities between the modern and traditional forces are revealed as these women voluntarily assume the homemakers role, aspire to marry their partners, and re-claim respectability in an innovative way within their modern live-in relations."
