Osteoartritis (OA) merupakan penyakit sendi yang sering dijumpai dan salah satu penyebab disabititas serta nyeri. Osteoartritis banyak menyerang sendi penumpu berat badan seperti lutut, panggul dan tulang belakang. Prevalensi penyakit ini meningkat tajam pada usia lebih dan 55 tahun. Dan beberapa sendi penumpu berat badan, OA lutut paling sering dikeluhkan terutama pada wanita dan penderita obesitas. Pada suatu studi yang dilakukan oleh Mannoni dkk, prevalensi OA lutut di Italia diperkirakan 29,8%.
