"Perdagangan cinderamata berbahan dasar karapas penyu sisik melibatkan kegiatan wildlife crime, yaitu perburuan dan perdagangan spesies tersebut secara ilegal. Kurangnya kesadaran masyarakat mengenai isu wildlife crime dan nilai ekonomis dari penyu sisik menjadi faktor penyebab perdagangan yang mengeksploitasi bagian tubuh spesies tersebut masih terjadi. Data yang diperoleh dari WWF Indonesia menunjukkan pemanfaatan media sosial dan e-commerce sebagai tempat para pedagang menawarkan bagian tubuh penyu sisik dalam bentuk cinderamata. Penulis berpendapat bahwa perburuan penyu sisik merupakan bentuk dari illegal poaching dan perdagangannya termasuk ke dalam wildlife trade. Berdasarkan pembahasan enviromental crime, kedua kegiatan tersebut melanggar animal rights, dengan menjadikan penyu sisik sebagai objek, dan species justice, dengan melihat dominasi manusia sebagai penyebab eksploitasi spesies tersebut. Regulasi yang berbentuk larangan dinilai tidak mampu menekan kasus perburuan dan perdagangan penyu sisik secara efektif, sehingga dibutuhkan juga cara lainnya seperti gerakan sosial yang bertujuan mengedukasi masyarakat. Penulis berpendapat adanya kesadaran mengenai peran penting penyu sisik dalam sistem ekologi dapat menahan sifat konsumtif yang menjadi tanda dari dominasi manusia terhadap spesies lain.

The trade of souvenirs made with hawksbill turtle carapace involves a wildlife crime activity, which are hunting and illegal trading of the said species. The lack of people's awareness towards the issue of wildlife crime and economic value of hawksbill turtles become the causation factors of the prevalence of trades that exploit body parts of said species. Data from WWF Indonesia shows that the usage of social media and e-commerce as a place where traders offer the hawksbill turtle's body parts as souvenirs. This paper argues that the hunting of hawksbill turtles is a form of illegal poaching and its trade is considered a wildlife trade. Based on environmental crime, those two activities violates the animal rights because of the objectification of hawksbill turtles and species justice when human's domination are seen as the causation factor said species' exploitation. Regulations in a form of forbidding is seen as unable to effectively reduce the cases of hunting and trading of hawksbill turtles, thus another way, such as social movement which objective is to educate people, is needed. This paper argues that awareness of hawksbill turtles' role in ecology system can hold back human's consumptive nature that is a sign of human domination against another species."
