"We used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the effects of non-native language (English) exposure in first-, second-, and third-year (4- to 6-year-old) preschool Japanese native children while they listened to semantically congruent and incongruent Japanese sentences. Our previous study (Takahashi et al., in press) showed that differences owing to exposure to a non-native language (English) appeared in second-year preschoolers but not in first-year preschoolers; in second-year preschoolers, the N400 onset was shorter in the children who were exposed to English than in those who were exposed to Japanese only. In the present study, we compared the ERPs recorded from each of the 3 preschool years to investigate the long-term effects of exposure to a non-native language on the development of semantic processing of the native language. The children were divided into a high degree of non-native language-exposed group (high group) and a low degree of non-native language-exposed group (low group) on the basis of their exposure to a non-native language in their kindergartens. The results showed that the N400 was observed in all age groups, whereas late positive components (LPCs) were only observed in third-year preschoolers. The effects of non-native language exposure on ERP waveforms were observed in the second- and third-year preschoolers. In second-year preschoolers, the latency of the N400 was shorter in the high group than in the low group, whereas there was no difference in the N400 offset between the high and low groups. Furthermore, the broad distribution of the N400 persisted longer in the high group than in the low group. In third-year preschoolers, the duration of the LPC was longer in the high group than in the low group. These results indicate that both the N400 and LPC are related to semantic processing for native language sentences in preschool children and that the waveforms of these components vary depending on the development and degree of exposure to a non-native language."

The Javanese language is a language that has a lot of words, including words that mean feelings of love. Previous research related to the richness of words in the Javanese language generally examined the semantic field of feelings in the Javanese language. With more than one word that means love in Javanese, this raises a problem, namely what are the words that mean love in Javanese and their semantic field? The purpose of this research is to show the words that mean love in Javanese along with their semantic field. This study used four Javanese dictionaries as data sources in different publication periods to obtain more complete data, compared to previous studies which generally used only one dictionary as the main data. In addition, this study also used data sources from a book entitled Antologi Cerita Pendek Bahasa Jawa di Yogyakarta, Djaka Lodhang magazine, and the Javanese language corpus from the Javanese Literature Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia for data on sentences meaning love. The research method used is a qualitative method to analyze data comprehensively with a descriptive approach to provide an overview of the results of data analysis. The theory used in this research is Nida’s (1975) analysis of meaning components. The results of the study show that the Javanese language has thirteen words that convey the meaning of love, but only eight words are found in the sample sentences."

Poetry serves as a challenging subject in the area of translation for its use of a specialized language. Apart from the form and sound, the figurative language from the source language must be translated with the same meaning or sense to the target language. In this way, the translator rsquo;s decision to use certain translation procedures to translate the text to the target language, in which it includes his interpretation of the text, would affect the meaning in the poem. Facing the challenge, this study examines the translation procedures by Vinay and Darbelnet 1958 in a contemporary Indonesian poem translation by Harry Aveling titled 'Sermon'.
The poem was originally written in 1968 as 'Khotbah' by a famous and influencing Indonesian poet, W. S. Rendra. The poem is a free verse to criticize the religious ignorance of the people in the era. The alternation in translating the poetry is being analysed using referential and connotative meaning by Nida and Taber 1982 to reconstruct the meaning in the translation version of this poem, as well as the original form for the comparative analysis. In return, this alteration reveals the evident power of translator to use his interpretation in rewriting the poem to the target language.

"Different form many other name-giving possibilities in the world, in Indonesia parents are free to give their children any name they like. These names, many of which are auspicious in view of the child?s future, are often constructed by means of productive morphological procedures. Seven suffixes are followed through history and culture and their possibilities in making new names are explored. The suffixes concern the female ?ingsih, ?ingrum, ?ingtyas, ?ingdyah ?astuti, ?wati, and the male ?wan. Various ins and outs concerning these suffixes are explored and their attachments to various words from various word classes from Indonesian, Javanese and other language revealed. Cross-language name construction leads to trans-language creations that play a possible role in the constitution of Indonesian nation building. The procedures moreover seem to indicate trends away from the inclination to give children Muslim names."
