The Girl with Seven Names.
The number of North Korean migrants in South Korea continues to increase every year. According to the Ministry of Unification of the Republic of Korea, the number of North Korean migrants residing in South Korea reached 33,523 in 2019. In adapting to South Korean society, North Korean migrants can experience culture shock. This is driven by the significant cultural differences between North and South Korea after being divided for more than seventy years. This culture shock experience is reflected in the memoir The Girl with Seven Names by Hyeonseo Lee, one of the most popular memoirs by North Korean migrants. This memoir tells of Lee's experience in finding her identity while living in North Korea, China, and South Korea. This study aims to understand how the culture shock faced by North Korean migrants is illustrated in the memoir The Girl with Seven Names. Using Oberg's (1960) theory regarding stages of culture shock, this study found that North Korean migrants go through all stages of culture shock in adapting to South Korean society. Of all the stages, the crisis stage becomes the stage of culture shock that most describes the adaptation problems of North Korean migrants in South Korea. The results of this study also showed that culture shock was not only experienced by people with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds."
