"Peristiwa Gerakan Demokratisasi Gwangju telah menjadi gerakan titik balik dari demokratisasi Korea Selatan yang dinilai mampu dan berhasil membuka perubahan dalam pemerintahan di Korea Selatan. Pada sisi lain, terdapat fakta penyensoran pada media massa yang berhubungan dengan pemberitaan Gerakan Demokratisasi Gwangju. Penelitian ini menganalisis mengenai bagaimana media massa yang memuat informasi-informasi terkait dengan peristiwa Gerakan Demokratisasi Gwangju 1980 mengalami penyensoran di bawah pemerintahan Chun Doo-hwan yang otoriter. Dengan menerapkan teori pers otoriter dalam analisis, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap bagaimana akhirnya peristiwa Gerakan Demokratisasi Gwangju 1980 diketahui dunia melalui peran wartawan asal Jerman bernama Jürgen Hinzpeter. Dari hasil analisis diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa penyensoran media massa yang terjadi berupa pengendalian pers dan manipulasi berita oleh pemerintah Korea Selatan. Penyensoran tersebut membuktikan karakter kediktatoran yang ada pada kepemimpinan Chun Doo-hwan. Diketahui bahwa pelarangan meliput berita di Gwangju tidak hanya terjadi pada media Korea Selatan saja, namun juga pada media asing. Dengan hal ini, maka dapat dikatakan bahwa media massa pada pemerintahan militer di Korea Selatan selama pemerintahan Chun Doo-hwan menjadi komponen yang turut berkuasa dalam menekan masyarakat Korea Selatan.

The Gwangju Democratization Movement has become a turning point movement from the democratization of South Korea which is considered capable and successful in opening changes in the South Korean government. On the other hand, there is a fact of censorship in the mass media related to the news of the Gwangju Democratization Movement. This study analyzes the mass media containing information related to the Gwangju Democratization Movement 1980 that underwent censorship under the authoritarian Chun Doo-hwan government. By applying authoritarianism media theory in the analysis, this study aims to uncover how the Gwangju Democratization Movement 1980 was finally known to the world through the role of a German journalist named Jürgen Hinzpeter. From the analysis, it was concluded that media censorship occurred in the form of press control and news manipulation by the South Korean government proved the character of the dictatorship that existed in the leadership of Chun Doo-hwan. It is known that the ban on covering news in Gwangju does not only occur in South Korean media but also in foreign media. With this, it can be said that the mass media in the military government in South Korea during the Chun Doo-hwan period became a component that had the power to suppress the South Korean society."

"Demokrasi yang menjadi dasar sistem pemerintahan Republik Korea adalah ideologi asing yang diadopsi rakyat Korea Selatan menjadi dasar sistem pemerintahan negara yang telah melalui pertumpahan darah. Peristiwa menegakkan demokrasi yang dikenal dengan Demokrasi Gwangju 1980 berhasil membuat perubahan besar dalam ranah pemerintahan di Korea Selatan. Pada masa tersebut, kebijakan presiden Republik Korea Chun Doo-hwan, yang berasal dari kelompok militer, banyak mengundang protes dari kalangan masyarakat. Banyak warga sipil terutama mahasiswa-mahasiswi yang memprotes kebijakannya dan melakukan Gerakan Demokratisasi di beberapa wilayah Gwangju dan Jeonnam. Gerakan pro demokrasi yang terjadi menyebabkan pasukan militer di bawah pemerintahan Chun Doo-hwan melakukan persekusi terhadap warga sipil. Amerika Serikat yang merupakan sekutu juga ikut berperan dalam menangani kejadian di Gwangju. Berhubungan dengan persekusi oleh pemerintahan Chun Doo-hwan, muncul satu pertanyaan penelitian yang penting untuk dikaji, yaitu apa peran Amerika di balik persekusi militer di masa pemerintahan Chun Doo-hwan? Melalui metode deskriptif-analisis, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan bagaimana peran Amerika Serikat terhadap perlawanan militer Chun Doo-hwan dalam Demonstrasi Gwangju 1980. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah peran Amerika Serikat dalam perlawanan militer Chun Doo-hwan yaitu menyetujui dan mendukung pemerintah Korea Selatan untuk mengerahkan pasukan gabungan Korea Selatan-Amerika Serikat untuk mengakhiri kekacauan dalam Demonstrasi Gwangju 1980.

Democracy is a foreign ideology adopted by the South Korean people as the basis form of the South Korean’s government system which has been through bloodshed. The event to uphold democracy, known as the 1980 Kwangju Democracy Movement, succeeded in making major changes in the realm of governance in South Korea. At the time, the policies made by the president of the Republic of Korea Chun Doo-hwan, who came from the military group, garnered many protests from the public. Many civilians, especially students, protested against his policies and carried out the Democratization Movement in some areas of Kwangju and Jeonnam. The pro-democracy movement that occurred caused the military forces under Chun Doo-hwan's government to persecute civilians. The United States, which is an ally, played a role in resolving the situation that occurred in Kwangju. Due to the persecution by Chun Doo-hwan's regime, one important research question arises, namely, what was America's role behind the military persecution in Chun Doo-hwan's reign? Through descriptive-analysis method, this study aims to explain what the United States' role in Chun Doo-hwan's military resistance in the 1980 Kwangju Demonstration is. The conclusion of this study is the United States' role in Chun Doo-hwan's military resistance was to approve and support the South Korean government to deploy joint ROK-US troops to end the chaos of the 1980 Kwangju Demonstrations."
