"Tulisan ini membahas perkembangan ekonomi Cina pasca Mao Zedong dan hubungan ekonomi Cina dengan ASEAN-Cina Free Trade Area. Deng Xiaoping merupakan tokoh sentral dalam usaha modernisasi di Cina, reformasi Cina yang dicanangkan pada tahun 1978, yaitu program ?Reformasi dan Keterbukaan' (Gaige Kaifang) yang telah membawa Cina pada sebuah sistem perekonomian baru ala Cina yaitu sistem pasar-sosialis. Pada tahun 1982 perekonomian Cina telah terbuka pada perdagangan luar negeri dan investasi asing. Hal ini menyebabkan pertumbuhan ekonomi Cina terus mengalami peningkatan, pada tahun 2002 negara-negara anggota ASEAN melakukan kerjasama perdagangan bebas dengan Cina mengenai penurunan tarif, bea masuk dan pajak. Integrasi ekonomi ini memacu masuknya Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) yang akan membantu menstimulasi pertumbuhan ekonomi di ASEAN dan di Cina melalui perbaikan teknologi, penciptaan lapangan kerja, pembangunan sumber daya manusia (human capital) dan memperluas akses ke pasar dunia.

This paper discusses China's economic development post Mao Zedong and China's economic relations with ASEAN - China Free Trade Area. Deng Xiaoping was a central figure in the effort of modernization in China. China's reform, proclaimed in 1978, which is a program of ?Reform and Openness' (Gaige Kaifang), has brought China to a new Chinese-style economic system, i.e. a socialist-market system. In 1982, China's economy had been open to foreign trade and foreign investment. This caused China's economic growth to continue to increase. In 2002, ASEAN member countries conducted free trade cooperation with China regarding the reduction in tariffs, duties and taxes. This economic integration has spurred the entry of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) which will help stimulate economic growth in ASEAN and in China through technological improvement, employment procurement, human resource development (human capital); and will expand access to the world market."
