Norris, Pippa
"In this compelling book Pippa Norris and Joni Lovenduski provide the first full account of legislative recruitment in Britain for twenty-five years. Their central concern is how and why some politicians succeed in moving into the highest offices of state, while others fail. The book examines the relative dearth of women, black and working-class Members of Parliament, and whether the evident social bias in the British political élite matters for political representation. Legislative recruitment concerns the critical step from lower levels (activists, local counsellors) to a parliamentary career. The authors draw evidence from the first systematic surveys of parliamentary candidates, Members of Parliament and party selectors, as well as detailed personal interviews. The study explores how and why people become politicians, and the consequences for parties, legislatures and representative government."

"The author of this book addresses the two questions, what is college like for working-class students, and what is college for the working class? In The Other Three Percent, the author draws on a wealth of previous research to tell the stories of five very different working-class college students as they apply to, enter, successfully navigate, and complete college. Through these stories readers will learn about the obstacles working-class students face and overcome, the costs and effectiveness of higher education as a mechanism of social mobility, and the problems caused on our college campuses by our reticence to meaningfully confront the class divide. Readers will be invited to compare their own experiences of higher education with those of the students here described, and to evaluate their own institutions’ openness towards working-class students through a series of checklists provided in the book’s conclusion.
Capitalism as a system that appears in the middle of an industrial society become a phenomenon in the relation of human life. Karl Marx as an economic thinker, finding contradictions in its relation, the relation of the bourgeois and the proletariat. He stated that the relationship just decreasing human value, so that it needed a final idea to solve this class relationwith take a class struggle. But in fact the idea of finality considered the climax of the whole society is not yet touched the finality itself, many gaps still needed to be studied more in depth. Slavoj Zizek as Post-Marxian thinker tried to criticize the idea of finality brought by Marx. According to him, the idea of finality beyond forming process that is contingent and subject always trying to revise the arrangements existing symbolic."
