"Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis dan mengevaluasi representasi American Dream dalam film Amerika yang berjudul The Greatest Showman (2017) (TGS). Terinspirasi dari kisah hidup tokoh self-made man di abad ke-19 yang bernama P.T. Barnum, film TGS menceritakan perjalanan karakter Barnum menjadi pebisnis sirkus dengan menggunakan struktur naratif rags to riches pada abad ke-19. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif-analitis dengan pendekatan kualitatif, yang berfokus pada karakter Barnum dan karakter pemain sirkus Barnum yang merepresentasikan kaum minoritas beraneka ragam ras, warna kulit, dan keunikan fisik. Penelitan ini berargumen bahwa film TGS merekonstruksi American Dream di abad ke-19. TGS memahami bahwa American Dream bukan lagi mengenai kesuksesan finansial semata, melainkan keseimbangan antara pemenuhan pribadi dan kepentingan keluarga, tanpa harus mengagungkan pencapaian duniawi seperti reputasi dan kekayaan. Penelitian ini juga berargumen bahwa film TGS menggambarkan sirkus Barnum sebagai versi utopis American Dream dengan menciptakan komunitas yang memberi kesempatan yang setara bagi semua kelas dan ras untuk tampil dan mendapatkan apresiasi atas kemampuannya. Akan tetapi, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa representasi American Dream dalam film TGS masih tetap melanggengkan hak istimewa laki-laki berkulit putih.

This study aims to analyze and evaluate the representation of the American Dream in the American film entitled The Greatest Showman (2017) (TGS). Inspired by the life story of a self-made man in the 19th century, P.T. Barnum, TGS tells the journey of Barnum's character to become a circus businessman in 19th-century through rags to riches narrative structure. This study uses a descriptive-analytical method with a qualitative approach, which focuses on the character of Barnum and the character of the Barnum circus performers who represent minorities of various races, skin colors, and physical uniqueness. This research argues that TGS reconstructs the concept of the American Dream of the 19th century. TGS understands that the American Dream is no longer about financial achievement, but a balance between personal fulfilment and family integrity, without glorifying secular accomplishments such as reputation and wealth. This study also argues that TGS portrays Barnum's circus as a utopian version of the American Dream by creating a community that provides equal opportunities for all classes and races to perform and gain an appreciation for their abilities. However, this study finds the representation of the American Dream in the TGS film still perpetuates the privilege of white men."

Film Gundala merupakan sebuah fenomena menarik dalam dunia perfilman Indonesia yang sempat menjadi salah satu topik paling hangat dibicarakan di social media pada pertengahan tahun 2019. Hanya dalam waktu 7 hari penonton film Gundala telah mencapai lebih dari 1 juta penonton dari seluruh Indonesia. Tidak heran apabila film ini meraih sejumlah prestasi yang membanggakan bagi perfilman Indonesia di kancah nasional maupun internasional. Kesuksesan ini menarik perhatian dari peneliti untuk mencari tahu apa yang membuat penonton puas terhadap film Gundala dikaitkan dengan teori terbaru Movie Marketing Mix dan Word of Mouth (WOM). Movie Marketing Mix dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari variabel People, Script, Features Promotions, dan Satisfaction. Ternyata dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa variabel Script dan Word of Mouth memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap kepuasan dari penonton film Gundala.

Gundala Movie was an interesting phenomenon for Indonesian movie industry which had been one of the hottest topic discussed on social media in mid 2019. In just 7 days, Gundala reached more than 1 million viewers across the country. No wonder if the film had a numbers of proud achievements for Indonesian movie industry in national level to international level. This success leads to the writer’s attention to do find out about what is the reason the behind Gundala movie audience’s satisfaction associated with the latest theory of Movie Marketing Mix and Word of Mouth (WOM). Movie Marketing Mix in this study consisted of the variable People, Script, Features Promotions, and Satisfaction. It turns out that in this study it was found that the Script and Word of Mouth variables had a significant influence on the satisfaction of Gundala film viewers.

"ABSTRAKAmerican dream merupakan sebuah paham penting yang berasal dari Amerika. Merupakan sebuah istilah yang selama ini telah banyak dipergunakan di seluruh Amerika, menjabarkan bahwa setiap manusia memiliki hak untuk meraih kesuksesan. The Pursuit of Happyness merupakan salah satu dari banyak film yang telah mengusung paham American dream. Melalui penggambaran karakter utama, Chris Gardner, paham American dream telah tercermin di dalam banyak aspek di film tersebut. Terlepas dari unsur perjuangan dan individualisme, film ini juga membahas sebuah perspektif baru akan American dream di dalam pandangan seorang Afrika Amerika. Tulisan ini juga mencoba membandingkan film Pursuit of Happyness dengan novel A Raisin in The Sun, sebuah literatur lainnya yang mengkaji lebih lanjut mengenai American dream dalam pandangan Generasi Y dan X. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan analisis tekstual dan serta pendekatan sosiologi di dalam usahanya untuk melihat bagaimana American dream terlihat di film ini.

ABSTRACTAmerican dream is an important value that originated from United States of America. It is a term that have been widely used across the nation which describes that every man has a right to obtain success. The Pursuit of Happyness is one of many movies that discussed American dreams elements. Throughout the main character, Chris Gardner, American dream has been reflected in many aspects in the movie Pursuit of Happyness. Asides of the struggle and individualism elements, the movie also depicts a new perspective of American dream in the lens of African American. This paper also comparing movie Pursuit of Happyness with novel A Raisin in The Sun, another literature where explains more about how American dream is seeing by the Generation Y and Generation X. The research uses a textual analysis and sociology approach in order to see how American dream is reflected in the movie."

"American Hustle 2013 merupakan film Hollywood yang mana plot dan karakternya secara umum dibuat berdasarkan pada peristiwa operasi ABSCAM yang dilakukan oleh FBI di akhir tahun 1970. Akan tetapi, terdapat beberapa perubahan dalam penggambaran tokoh Sydney Prosser dan perannya di dalam film ini yang justru menghasilkan penggambaran Sydney Prosser versi modern yang mana sangat berbeda dari karakter tokoh dalam peristiwa sebenarnya. Oleh karena itu, makalah ini mencoba untuk membahas bagaimana penggambaran modern tokoh Sydney Prosser dan interaksinya dengan para tokoh utama pria yang justru menunjukkan adanya bias patriarki pada akhirnya menciptakan ambivalensi terhadap representasi perempuan dalam film ini dengan menggunakan pendekatan analisis kritis dan tekstual dalam kaitannya dengan teori representasi gender dan patriarki.

American Hustle 2013 is a Hollywood film whose plot and characters are generally based on the real story during the FBI ABSCAM operation. Nevertheless, several planned transformations in depicting Sydney Prosser and her role result in promoting modern image of her character which is quite different from the real one. Therefore, this paper attempts to discover how Sydney Prosser's image and her interactions with the male protagonists imply patriarchal biases which actually create ambivalences toward women's representation by using critical and textual analysis and the framework of gender representation and patriarchy. Tulisan ini akan membahas representasi dari mitos American Adam yang digambarkan dalam film The Dreamers 2004 karya sutradara asal Italia Bernardo Bertulloci. Dengan menyesuaikan fase mitos American Adam yang dikemukakan oleh R.W. B. Lewis 1955 , tulisan ini akan mengikuti jejak mitos American Adam melalui perkembangan psikologis sang pemeran utama, Matthew. ABSTRACTOne of the distinguished myths of America is the American Adam. The fact that the American Adam is applied within several contemporary cultural products, such as books, films, and songs are cannot be denied. This study will discuss the representation of the American Adam that is depicted in the film The Dreamers 2004 by an Italian director, Bernardo Bertulloci. By adjusting the phases of the American Adam from R. W. B. Lewis 1955 , this research will trace the track of the American Adam through Matthew rsquo s psychological development, as the main character in this film. Moreover, the representation of the American Adam in The Dreamers 2004 has brought a different perspective towards America through the lens of European cinema, specifically Italian cinema production. "ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan rekonstruksi citra Tuhan dalam film The Shack 2017 . Analisis akan menafsirkan representasi karakter dan adegan tertentu yang digambarkan dalam film. Korpus artikel ini adalah film berjudul The Shack, yang mewakili Tuhan dalam Nasrani yang direifikasi dalam tiga ras yang berbeda. Wacana masalah rasial dalam teori postkolonial sebagian besar digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk memahami konteks dalam menafsirkan. Artikel ini memilih untuk mengeksplorasi film daripada versi novel untuk mendapatkan analisis yang lebih holistik, dengan penambahan fitur sinematografi di samping aspek intrinsik dari narasi. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa gambar Tuhan dipersonifikasikan dan direkonstruksi menjadi ras non-kulit putih untuk menantang isu rasial dan mematahkan wacana kekuasaan antara kulit putih, Afrika Amerika, Timur Tengah, dan Asia-Amerika.

ABSTRACTThis study aims to prove the reconstruction of God image in the movie The Shack 2017 . The analysis will interpret the representation of certain characters and scenes portrayed in the movie. The corpus of this article is movie titled The Shack, which represents the reified Christian God in three different races. Discourse of racial issue in postcolonial theory is mostly used as the instrument to understand the context to interpret. This article decided to explore the film rather than the novel in order to get a more holistic analysis by the addition of cinematographic features beside the intrinsic aspects of narrative. The result of this study shows that God image is personified and reconstructed into non-white races to challenge the racial issue and undermine the discourse of power between white, African American, Middle East, and Asian-American."

"ABSTRAKHomoseksual bukanlah sebuah tema yang baru dalam perfilman di Jerman. Dahulu film-film bertemakan homoseksual pernah mati akibat rezim Nazi, karena Nazi membenci homoseksualitas dan beranggapan bahwa homoseksualitas mengancam maskulinitas negara. Setelah tumbangnya Nazi film-film bertemakan homoseksual mulai kembali bermunculan, salah satunya adalah film bertajuk Jonathan. Penelitian ini membahas mengenai representasi homoseksual yang terdapat pada film Jonathan 2016 sebagai film debut karya Piotr. J. Lewandowski. Tidak seperti film bertemakan homoseksual lainnya, Jonathan menampilkan tokoh gay yang hidup dalam kesengsaraan. Kesengsaraan tokoh gay disebabkan keputusannya untuk mengingkari orientasi seksualnya yang kemudian menyebabkan efek domino kepada istri dan anaknya. Di akhir film orientasi seksual tokoh utama diterima oleh keluarganya sebelum ia mati dan hal ini melahirkan kebahagiaan serta penerimaan diri pada tokoh utama. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memperlihatkan representasi homoseksual di pedesaan Jerman dalam film. Untuk meneliti bagaimana film merepresentasikan homoseksual, maka diperlukan teori semiotika dari John Fiske, yang lebih fokus pada tanda dalam film, sehingga dapat diketahui bagaimana tokoh homoseksual direpresentasikan melalui kostum, pencahayaan, dan musik dalam film. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pengingkaran diri tidak saja merugikan diri sendiri, tapi juga merugikan orang lain. Penerimaan diri amatlah penting, tidak saja untuk kebahagiaan diri sendiri, tapi juga untuk kebahagiaan orang lain, terutama keluarga.

ABSTRACT<>br>Homosexuality is not a foreign film theme in German. Formerly homosexual themed films had died from the Nazi regime, because the Nazis hated homosexuality and thought that homosexuality threatened the state rsquo s masculinity. After the fall of the Nazi, homosexual themed films began to re emerge, one of which is a film titled Jonathan. This study discusses the homosexual representation found in Jonathan 2016 as Piotr. J. Lewandowski rsquo s debut film. Unlike other gay themed films, Jonathan features gay character who lives in a misery. The gay character rsquo s misery is due to his decision to deny his sexual orientation, which then causes a domino effect on his wife and son. At the end of the film, the main character rsquo s sexual orientation is accepted by his family before he dies and this give happiness and self acceptance for the main character. The purpose of this study is to show homosexual representation in rural Germany in the film. To examine how this film represents homosexuality, it takes the semiotic theory of John Fiske, which focuses more on the sign in the film, so it can be seen how the homosexual character is represented through costumes, lighting, and music in the film. This research shows that self denial is not only self defeating, it also harms others. Self acceptance is very important, not only for the happiness of oneself, but also for the happiness of others, especially the family."

"ABSTRAKMakalah ini menganalisis tentang penggambaran agama dalam film PK dengan menggunakan semiotik Roland Barthes. Ada banyak penelitian yang menganalisis penggambaran agama dalam sastra. Namun, masih sedikit sekali penelitian yang melakukan penggambaran agama dalam film. PK memunculkan isu sensitif tentang agama, terutama agama Hindu. Untuk mengetahui penggambaran agama dalam sebuah film, saya memusatkan perhatian pada penggambaran karakter utama, interaksinya dengan karakter dan dialog lain dalam film PK. Dari analisis penanda, petanda, dan mitos dalam adegan, saya menemukan bahwa agama dalam film ini digambarkan sebagai sesuatu yang membatasi dan memecah belah seseorang maupun kelompok masyarakat, berfungsi sebatas simbol identitas, menggelikan, dan juga gagal dalam mempertahankan nilai moral di masyarakat.

ABSTRACTThis paper performed an exploratory semiotic analysis Roland Barthes on the portrayal of religion in PK film. There are many studies analyzing religion portrayal in literature. However, there is still little research on the portrayal of religion films. PK brings up a sensitive issue about religion, especially for Hindu. In order to discover the depiction of religion in a film, I focus on the portrayal of the main character, his interaction with other character and dialogues in PK film. From analyzing the signifier, signified, and myth in the scenes, I found that religion in this film is represented as something restrictive and divisive, symbol of identity, a ludicrous, and it also failed to maintain the moral value in the society."
