"The Great Wall (长城 Chángchéng) adalah film kerja sama antara Cina dan Hollywood yang disutradarai oleh Zhang Yimou. Film ini resmi dirilis pada Desember 2016 di Cina dan Februari 2017 di Amerika Serikat. Film yang mengambil latar waktu pada masa Dinasti Song Utara (960-1127 M) ini menceritakan tentang pedagang dari barat yang melakukan perjalanan ke Cina untuk mencari bubuk mesiu. Ia tidak sengaja terjebak dalam Tembok Besar bersama pasukan rahasia Cina yang sedang bertarung melawan serangan gerombolan monster. Pada akhirnya ia melepaskan tujuan awalnya datang ke Cina setelah berinteraksi dengan pasukan tersebut, khususnya lewat tokoh utama perempuan yang mengenalkannya kepada xinren (信任xìnrèn). Xinren adalah sebuah konsep yang berakar dari Konfusianisme yang memiliki arti percaya. Tulisan ini membahas penjelasan xinren, perbedaan motivasi dua tokoh utama (Jenderal Lin Mei dan William Garin) dalam bertarung, serta pergeseran karakter William melalui adegan-adegan yang berhubungan dengan xinren. Tulisan ini menggunakan metode deskriptif analitis untuk menganalisis data tersebut. Hasil analisis menunjukan bahwa karakter William bergeser dari egois menjadi turut memikirkan kepentingan orang lain berkat xinren.

The Great Wall (长城 Chángchéng) is a China-Hollywood coproduction film directed by Zhang Yimou. It was officially released on December 2016 in China and February 2017 in USA. The film, which takes place in the time of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127 CE) tells the story of a trader from the west who traveled to China seeking for gunpowder. He was accidentaly trapped in the Great Wall with Chinese secret troops who were fighting against attack from hordes of monsters. In the end he disposed his original purpose of coming to China after interacting with the troops, especially through the main female character, who introduces him to xinren (信任xìnrèn). Xinren is a concept rooted from Confucianism which means trust. This paper discuss xinren explanation, the difference in motivation of the two main characters (General Lin Mei and William Garin) in fighting, as well as William`s character shift through scenes related to xinren. This paper uses descriptive analytical methods to analyze data. The results of the analysis show that William`s character shift from selfish to take part in considering other people`s interest because of xinren."

"Tesis ini mengkaji dua film produksi Hollywood, The Great Wall (2016) dan Doctor Strange (2016), yang memperlihatkan gejala supremasi kulit putih di dalamnya. Untuk mengkaji kedua film sebagai teks, tesis ini menggunakan pendekatan cinema studies yang menganalisis aspek naratif dan sinematografis (Boggs & Petrie, 2008). Selanjutnya, digunakan teori semiotik struktural dari Roland Barthes untuk membaca simbol-simbol yang mendukung penghadiran supremasi kulit putih dalam teks. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa logika cerita dibentuk melalui peristiwa-peristiwa penting dalam teks yang memperlihatkan keunggulan tokoh kulit putih. Penokohan tampak di dalam teks melalui konstruksi tokoh kulit putih yang hadir secara dominan dalam tataran peristiwa dan interaksi dengan tokoh lainnya. Tempat-tempat yang dihadirkan di dalam kedua teks tidak sekadar menjadi latar yang melengkapi unsur naratif film, tapi berperan pula sebagai ruang ideologis yang memperlihatkan dominasi tokoh kulit putih. Sementara itu, simbol-simbol dan objek-objek dominan yang hadir di dalam teks dapat dibaca sebagai penanda supremasi kulit putih. Supremasi kulit putih menjadi ideologi teks The Great Wall dan Doctor Strange.

This thesis examines two Hollywood films, The Great Wall (2016) and Doctor Strange (2016), which show symptoms of white supremacy in them. To study the two films as texts, this thesis uses a cinema studies approach which analyzes narrative and cinematographic aspects (Boggs & Petrie, 2008). Next, Roland Barthes' structural semiotic theory is used to read symbols that support the presence of white supremacy in the text. This research shows that the logic of the story is formed through important events in the text that show the superiority of white characters. Characterization appears in the text through the construction of white characters who are dominantly present at the level of events and interactions with other characters. The places presented in the two texts do not just serve as backgrounds that complement the film's narrative elements, but also act as ideological spaces that show the dominance of white characters. Meanwhile, the dominant symbols and objects present in the text can be read as markers of white supremacy. White supremacy is the ideology of the texts of The Great Wall and Doctor Strange."

"White Snake: The Origin (2019) merupakan film animasi yang menceritakan kisah persaudaraan yang kompleks antara Siluman Ular Putih (Xiao Bai) dan Siluman Ular Hijau (Xiao Qing). Film adaptasi ini merupakan film adaptasi pertama dari cerita mitologi Legenda Siluman Ular Putih yang disajikan dalam bentuk animasi dan menceritakan kisah awal mula terjadinya legenda tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas penerapan prinsip xinren dalam film tersebut dengan menganalisis kompleksitas hubungan persaudaraan Xiao Bai dan Xiao Qing. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penerapan prinsip xinren dalam hubungan antara Xiao Bai dan Xiao Qing mempengaruhi dinamika hubungan mereka. Selain itu, kompleksitas penerapan prinsip xinren dalam hubungan persaudaraan antara Xiao Bai dan Xiao Qing membuat karakter dan peran dari tokoh Xiao Bai dan Xiao Qing dan hubungan mereka dalam film menjadi lebih kuat dan kompleks. Melalui penerapan prinsip xinren, film ini juga dapat menciptakan refleksi dan pembelajaran mendalam terhadap norma dan etika yang relevan bagi masyarakat modern.

The film White Snake: The Origin (2019) is an animated film that tells the story of a complex relationship between the White Snake Demon (Xiao Bai) and the Green Snake Demon (Xiao Qing). This film adaptation is the first film adaptation of the mythological story The Legend of the White Snake Demon which is presented in animated form and tells the story of how the legend began. This research aims to discuss the application of the xinren principle in the film by analyzing the complexity of Xiao Bai and Xiao Qing's sibling relationship. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The research results show that the application of xinren principles in the relationship between Xiao Bai and Xiao Qing influences the dynamics of their relationship. Apart from that, the complexity of applying the xinren principle in the sibling relationship between Xiao Bai and Xiao Qing makes the characters and roles of Xiao Bai and Xiao Qing and their relationship in the film stronger and more complex. Through the application of xinren principles, this film can also create in-depth reflection and learning regarding norms and ethics that are relevant to modern society."
