"Representasi hubungan antara satu kelompok ras/etnis dengan yang lain di budaya populer Amerika Serikat lebih sering membahas hubungan orang kulit hitam sebagai minoritas dengan orang kulit putih sebagai mayoritas. Namun, ada peningkatan representasi di budaya populer yang menggambarkan hubungan antar kelompok minoritas, khususnya kelompok-kelompok orang kulit hitam yang beragam di AS. Walaupun representasi keragaman ini patut dirayakan, representasi ini layak dikritik. Penelitian ini menganalisis hubungan antara karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika dan Jamaika dalam serial televisi Netflix Marvel Luke Cage (2018) dengan menggunakan teori konstruksi Self/Other. Penulis berargumen bahwa karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika diposisikan sebagai Self melalui cara-cara yang menggambarkan mereka sebagai karakter-karakter yang bertentangan terhadap karakter-karakter Jamaika. Oleh karena itu, karakter-karakter Jamaika diposisikan sebagai Other. Proses Othering terhadap karakter-karakter tersebut dapat dilihat dari bagaimana mereka mempunyai lebih sedikit kekuasaan dari karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika. Selain itu, identitas mereka dipertentangkan dengan identitas karakter-karakter Afrika Amerika sehingga identitas mereka diberi kesan tidak sama unggulnya dengan identitas Afrika Amerika. Walaupun karakter-karakter Jamaika ini mempunyai agency untuk merespon terhadap proses Othering, mereka dapat dianggap sebagai “the dangerous Other” karena salah satu cara mereka menunjukkan agency tersebut.

Popular representations of race and ethnic relations in the US more often than not revolve around the Black minority-White majority discourse; however, there is an increase in pop culture media focusing on relationships among minorities, particularly the diverse Black population in the US. Although representing the diversity within Black people is applaudable, these representations are worth critiquing. This research analyzes the relationship between the Jamaican and African American characters in the Netflix Marvel TV series Luke Cage (2018) through the Self/Other construction theory. It argues that the African American characters are positioned as the Self due to how they are defined against the Jamaican characters. In turn, the Jamaican characters are positioned as the Other by having them struggle for power and contrasting their identity with the one embodied by the African American characters. Although the Jamaican characters are portrayed to have agency, the way they exercise it risks confining them to the dangerous Other trope."

This paper analyses the presence of stereotypes of African American women in the American television series Riverdale 2017 , which is adapted from ldquo;Archie Comics rdquo;. The series present a racially diverse cast, but this paper will focus on Josie McCoy, the lead singer of Josie and the Pussycats. This paper aims to examine how Josie and the Pussycats show a different way of portraying African-American women in media by using textual analysis and Black feminism approach by Hill Collins. "

"ABSTRAKTesis ini membahas mengenai terjadinya perubahan pergerakan kelompok etnis Afro-Amerika post-racial dalam menyikapi isu ketidaksetaraan ras terhadap kulit hitam melalui kemunculan gerakan Black Lives Matter. Post-racial dalam penelitian ini mengacu pada mitos dan kerangka pemikiran masalah ras yang muncul setelah terpilihnya Barack Obama sebagai Presiden Amerika Serikat. Dengan menggunakan metode historis dan pendekatan sosiologis, penelitian kualitiatif ini terfokus pada perkembangan gerakan Black Lives Matter sejak dibentuk pada tahun 2013 sampai tahun 2015, yang melakukan kampanye penggunaan hashtag “black lives matter” melalui dunia maya. Dengan mengkontekstualisasikan gerakan Black Lives Matter pada sejarah perjuangan pergerakan kaum Afro-Amerika, penelitian ini menunjukkan adanya pandangan dan tindakan Black Lives Matter yang bersifat lebih inklusif; yaitu pergerakan ini memiliki hubungan intersectionality dengan gerakan kulit hitam lainnya, yaitu gerakan feminis dan gerakan LGBT. Keterlibatan ini juga menunjukkan Black Lives Matter sebagai sebuah gerakan kulit hitam baru yang membuka batasan dan mewakili kelompok-kelompok minoritas yang secara historis terabaikan

ABSTRACTThis thesis discusses the shifts in post-racial’s African-American movement, focusing on racial inequality experienced by Black people and the emergence of Black Lives Matter movement. “Post-racial” in this research refers to the myth and racial framework that emerges after the election of Barack Obama as the president of USA. Using historical methods and sociological approaches, this qualitative research focuses on the development of Black Lives Matter movement since its formation in 2013 to 2015 campaigning of “black lives matter” hashtag through cyberspace. Contextualizing Black Lives Matter movement within the history of African-American civil rights struggle, the thesis indicates that the view and attitudes of Black Lives Matter is more inclusive; evidences show that the movement includes intersectionality of other Black movements, such as Black feminist and Black LGBT. Such inclusion also shows that Black Lives Matter become one of the new African-American movement that open the boundaries and represent minority groups that are historically neglected;"

"Perang yang terjadi di Afghanistan akibat dari serangan 11 September 2001 telah menginspirasi Hollywood untuk memproduksi film yang sering menceritakan dan menstereotip komunitas Muslim di Amerika. Representasi yang ditampilkan pun berubah dari waktu ke waktu. Sekarang, Hollywood tidak lagi sepenuhnya menggambarkan tokoh Muslim sebagai musuh dari dunia barat. Contohnya, film 12 Strong (2018) adalah salah satu film yang menceritakan perang Afghanistan. Film ini dipuji karena terlihat menampilkan representasi Muslim yang baik. Hal ini bisa dilihat dari bagaimana tokoh Muslim bersatu dengan tentara Amerika melawan teroris. Artikel ini akan melihat lebih jauh bagaimana tokoh Muslim direpresentasikan dalam film 12 Strong menggunakan konsep Orientalisme Edward Said. Temuan dalam artikel ini menunjukkan bahwa film ini menampilkan representasi yang bertolak belakang mengenai Muslim yang “baik” dan Muslim yang “buruk” dengan fokus utama yaitu Muslim pria. Karakterisasi Muslim yang “buruk” dikonstruksi dari gabungan sudut pandang Amerika dan Muslim Afghanistan, sedangkan karakterisasi Muslim yang “baik” dikonstruksi dari sudut pandang Amerika. Jadi, alih-alih memberikan representasi kritis Muslim dalam konteks Afghanistan, film ini mereproduksi narasi terpolarisasi yang mirip dengan film Hollywood sebelumnya.

The war that took place in Afghanistan as a result of 9/11 event has inspired Hollywood to create many movies which often address and stereotype Muslim communities in the country. This representation, however, shifts from time to time. Nowadays, Hollywood no longer completely depicts Muslim characters as totally the opposite of the Western world. 12 Strong (2018), for example, is one of the Afghan war movies that is celebrated for presenting a seemingly positive Muslim representation. This is depicted in how the Muslim characters unite with the American characters in the film to fight terrorism. This essay seeks to further examine how Muslims are represented in 12 Strong by using Edward Said’s Orientalism –framework. Findings in this article demonstrate that the film produces a polarization of “good” Muslims and “bad” Muslims in which one is juxtaposed with the other and with an exclusive focus on Muslim men.  Furthermore, the characterization of the “bad” Muslims is constructed from a combination of the perspectives of the American characters and the Muslim Afghan characters, while the characterization of “good” Muslims in the film is constructed from the Americans’ point of view. Thus, instead of providing a critical representation of Muslims in an Afghan context, this film reproduces polarized narratives similar to previous Hollywood movies that depict Islam."

"Aviation in the Literature and Culture of Interwar Britain looks at the impact of aviation in Britain and beyond through the 1920s and 1930s. "Dengan perkembanggan film dan TV series LGBT yang telah di buat, salah satu tema klise yang kerap di gunakan adalah tema klise Bury Your Gays (BYG) yang muncul di salah satu TV series terkenal yaitu Killing Eve yang di rilis tahun 2018. Akan tetapi, TV series tersebut memiliki kontroversi bukan hanya karena penggunaan tema klise negatif, namun juga dengan adanya penggunaan LGBT sebagai umpan taktik untuk menarik penonton yang terlihat jelas bagaimana TV series tersebut menyimpang dari bukunya dengan judul yang sama yang di tulis oleh Luke Jennings. Menggunakan analisis teks dengan teori tema klise Bury Your Gays milik Hulan (2017) dengan membandingkan TV series dengan buku, penelitian ini menganalisa bahwa TV series bertanggung jawab dalam merubah plot, dan karakterisasi tokoh LGBT yang menyebabkan kurangnya representasi LGBT yang sudah terbatas.

With the rising number of LGBTQ films and TV series made, one common trope that is often used by films and TV series is the Bury Your Gays (BYG) trope which appeared in one of the famous lesbian TV series that was released in 2018, Killing Eve. However, the show is controversial not only because of its negative use of the Bury Your Gays trope but also as a part of a queerbaiting tactic seen from how the TV series deviated from the source which is the book with the same title written by Luke Jennings and merely used it to gain audience engagement. Using textual analysis utilizing Hulan's (2017) Bury Your Gays trope theories and comparing the TV series and the book, the paper finds that the TV series is responsible for changing plots and characterization of the LGBT characters which undermines the already limited LGBT representation in the TV series."

Namun,belakangan ini perubahan mulai terjadi dengan munculnya tayangan-tayangan yang berfokus pada ras,contohnya Fresh off the Boat. Fresh off the Boat menawarkan perspektif baru dalam memandang kelompok rasminoritas ini melalui tatanan sitkom tradisional yang mengadaptasi karakter penduduk Asia. Sitkom ini jugamenggunakan humor untuk menentang miskonsepsi-miskonsepsi yang ada di khalayak ramai mengenaikelompok ras Asia-Amerika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membahas penggunaan komedi di dalam tayanganFresh off the Boat menggunakan konsep color-consciousness dan analisis tekstual. Penelitian ini menyimpulkanbahwa Fresh off the Boat memperlihatkan komedi sebagai sebuah strategi perlawanan yang berbeda.

ABSTRACTAsian-Americans have long been the victims of color-blindness practice in media. However, a shift started toemerge these past years with the premiere of some race-focused-sitcoms, such as Fresh off the Boat. Fresh offthe Boat offers a new perspective on Asian-Americans society through a traditional sitcom setup that adoptedAsian characteristics. The sitcom also uses humor as a way to contest misconceptions of this minority group inthe dominant view. This study attempts to examine the use of comedy in Fresh off the Boat using the concept ofcolor-consciousness and textual analysis. This study finds that Fresh off the Boat shows different comicstrategies of resistance."
