"Pada tahun 1920an, organisasi kriminal Kelompok Hijau (青帮) berhasil menguatkan kedudukannya di Shanghai. Selain menguasai dunia underworld (perjudian, prostitusi, dan pengedaran candu), Kelompok Hijau juga turun langsung dalam pemerintahan di kota Shanghai. Du Yuesheng (杜月笙), pemimpin Kelompok Hijau, sangat berperan dalam kesuksesan Kelompok Hijau kala tersebut. Kota Shanghai pada saat itu terbagi dalam tiga daerah pemerintahan utama, yaitu distrik Nanshi (Guomindang), konsensi Perancis, dan Pemukiman Internasional (Inggris). Tiga otroitas itu pun mengakui peranan Du Yuesheng. Awal kenaikan Du Yuesheng di Kelompok Hijau, hubungan serta peranannya dalam Pemerintahan Kota Shanghai di ketiga otoritas yang menguasai Shanghai, hingga berakhirnya pemerintahan kota Shanghai sehubungan dengan Agresi Militer Jepang tahun 1937 dibahas secara mendalam di tugas akhir ini.

In the 1920s, a criminal organization called Green Gang (青帮) succeed to strengthen its position in Shanghai. Aside from controlling the underworld (such as gambling, prostitution, and opium traffic), Green Gang also took part in Shanghai city government. Du Yuesheng (杜月笙), the leader of Green Gang, play a big role in the success of Green Gang at that period of time. At that point, Shanghai city government was divided into three governmental area, which are Nanshi District (ruled by Guomindang), French Concession, and Shanghai International Settlements (British). The rise of Du Yuesheng in Green Gang, his relationship as well as his role in Shanghai city government, up to the end of Shanghai city government as the military aggression by Japan happened in 1937 would be discussed deeply in this thesis."

"Tesis ini membahas permasalahan representasi budaya Timur dan Barat. Dengan menggunakan konsep Orientalisme Edward W. Said, analisis menunjukkan bahwa melalui narasi yang disampaikan oleh tokoh Timur, Timur dan Barat direpresentasikan secara kompleks dalam oposisi biner positif/negatif. Tokoh-tokoh Timur memaknai Barat sebagai subjek ideal. Barat merepresentasikan Timur dengan sangat stereotipik. Tokoh-tokoh Timur direpresentasikan sebagai pihak yang berusaha mengingkari identitasnya sebagai Timur dan memiliki pola pikir Barat. Akan tetapi akar budaya Timur yang kokohlah yang menjadi solusi self-denial itu. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa Shanghai Baby menawarkan suatu kritik yang berkaitan dengan pemaknaan dan representasi budaya Timur dan Barat yang stereotipik.

The thesis discusses the problems related to Eastern and Western culture representation. The analysis which is based on Orientalism concept of Edward W. Said, shows that the narration given by a character from Eastern world represents the Eastern and Western world in a positive/negative binary opposition. Characters from the Eastern World see the Western world as an ideal subject; whereas the Western counterparts represent the Eastern world in a very stereotypical manner. Characters from Eastern world are represented people who try to deny their identity as being from the Eastern world, however the robust root of Eastern culture has become solution for the self-denial problems. The result of the analysis shows that Shanghai Baby offers a critic pertaining to stereotypical understanding and representation of Eastern and Western world."
