"ABSTRAKPenelitian ini berkenaan dengan peristiwa invasi yang terjadi pada masa Perang Dunia II di Asia Pasifik, atau Perang Pasifik, di pulau Morotai, kepulauan Maluku. Pulau itu merupakan bagian dari kolonialisme Hindia Belanda sebelum dikuasai oleh pemerintahan Angkatan Laut Armada III kemaharajaan Jepang. Fokus penelitian ini adalah pada urgensi dan strategisnya pembangunan infra struktur militer di pulau Morotai yang kemudian menjadi kunci keberhasilan Amerika Serikat dalam merebut kembali Filipina. Dalam upaya ini AS mengembangkan poros Pasifik Barat Daya dengan merebut Morotai dan menjadikannya sebagai lokasi penempatan pesawat tempur serta logistik yang dibutuhkan. Terdapat tiga tahapan dalam upaya perebutan Morotai, yaitu: 1) perencanaan penyerangan dan penilaian pentingnya Morotai bagi AS, 2) operasi tempur untuk merebut pulau itu dan 3) pemanfaaatan landasan udara untuk menunjang operasi militer menyerbu Filipina. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode sejarah serta menggunakan sumber primer berupa arsip dan dokumen militer yang dimiliki oleh AS. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menambah pemahaman mengenai aspek perebutan wilayah dengan maksud untuk memanfaatkan landasan udara yang mendukung pertempuran di daratan. Dari penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa penggunaan landasan udara sangat penting sebagai bagian dari strategi tempur yang dilakukan oleh Jenderal Douglas MacArthur dalam upaya untuk menguasai kembali Filipina.

ABSTRACTThis research deals with an invasion during World War II in Asia-Pacific area, Pacific War, happened in Morotai island, the Moluccas. The island belonged to former Dutch East Indie before it fell down to the III Japanese Empire Navy Fleet. This research is focusing on building and maintaining military infrastructure in the island that was needed for US campaign in retaking the Philippines. There were three steps that were conducted in order to invade the Morotai, i.e: 1) planning and assessment about the islands importance for the US war effort in Southwest Pacific Area, 2) field operation to invade the island, 3) using of such an aerodrome to further assists military operation to regain the Philippines. The method used for this research is the method of history that used sources from US military archives and documents. This research aims to know more further on the aspects of military strategy as island invasions from the aerodrome to support ground combats. From this research, it is found that the usage of aerodrome in Morotai Island is very important in order to assist the military strategy of General Douglas MacArthur to recapture the Philippines."
