Donoghue, Emma
"'Frog music' is the new atmospheric and gripping novel by Emma Donoghue, author of the multi-million-copy bestseller Room, soon to be adapted as a major motion picture directed by Lenny Abrahamson. San Francisco, 1876: a stifling heat wave and smallpox epidemic have engulfed the City. Deep in the streets of Chinatown live three former stars of the Parisian circus: Blanche, now an exotic dancer at the House of Mirrors, her lover Arthur and his companion Ernest. When an eccentric outsider joins their little circle, secrets unravel, changing everything - and leaving one of them dead. Inspired by a true unsolved crime, 'Frog music', a New York Times bestseller, is a dark and compelling story of intrigue and murder."

Donoghue, Emma
""Emma Donoghue's explosive new novel, based on an unsolved murder in 1876 San Francisco. Summer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heatwave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman called Jenny Bonnet is shot dead. The survivor, her friend Blanche Beunon, is a French burlesque dancer. Over the next three days, she will risk everything to bring Jenny's murderer to justice--if he doesn't track her down first. The story Blanche struggles to piece together is one of free-love bohemians, desperate paupers and arrogant millionaires; of jealous men, icy women and damaged children. It's the secret life of Jenny herself, a notorious character who breaks the law every morning by getting dressed: a charmer as slippery as the frogs she hunts. In thrilling, cinematic style, FROG MUSIC digs up a long-forgotten, never-solved crime. Full of songs that migrated across the world, Emma Donoghue's lyrical tale of love and bloodshed among lowlifes captures the pulse of a boomtown like no other""

Pada tahun 2009, Disney mengeluarkan putri ras Afrika-Amerika bernama Tiana melalui film The Princess and the Frog (2009).

ABSTRACT
Disney princess fairytales have been one of the genres that made the Disney company so famous. At first, Disney princesses were stereotyped as white skinned. As time goes by, Disney started filming animated movies with more colored princesses. In 2009, Disney released a movie based on an African-American princess named Tiana through the movie „The Princess and the Frog‟ (2009). Ambiguities that tends to be racist are still deplicted in the film. To help analyzing this movie, Barthes‟ semiotics theory will be used. By using that theory, the writer will see that in one hand Disney is trying to convey that America has become “color blind”. This movie tends to picturize a reflection what Disney believe is true and ideal about the American society. On the other hand, inside that ideal society, blacks are still pictured as lower class. Here we see that the notion “all men are created equal” which is written in the declaration of Independence, is not fully implemented in the American society."
