"Place has certain connotations that are involved in shaping the identity of an individual or a community. Due to the importance of place or location in identity formation, Cultural Studies has its own area of analysis focusing on the understanding of place, which is cultural geography. Peter Jackson (1989: 23, quoted by Giles and Middleton 1999: 104) defines cultural geography as a study on how cultures are constituted by social practises occurring in certain contexts which are influenced by historical and geographical factors. The discussion of artistic works centred on the role of place in identity formation becomes an interesting analysis. This research focuses on Rudi Soejarwo?s film Mendadak Dangdut ('Suddenly Dangdut'). The film?s setting is a densely populated district in Jakarta. As the plot centres around this setting, an analysis of how place influences the identity formation of the film?s main character becomes significant. The research is made using approaches in cultural geography, along with two key concepts in Cultural Studies, which are identity and representation. It is aimed at finding a new consciousness as to how urban context, especially that related to an understanding of place, takes part in the formation of identity of individuals and communities."

"Tesis ini berusaha membongkar terjadinya dominasi Amerika dalam film Spanglish. Film yang bercerita tentang imigran Meksiko yang bekerja menjadi pembantu rumah tangga di rumah keluarga Amerika ini dianalisis secara semiotika Barthes yang menekankan kepada terjadinya ketimpangan identitas budaya orang Amerika dan Imigran dalam film produksi Amerika.Teori-teori yang digunakan adalah Hegemoni Gramsci dan Semiotika Barthes.Dalam penelitian tergambarkan bahwa ada hegemoni pada film produksi Columbia pitures ini.Secara kasat mata, dalam film tidak terlihat terjadinya hegemoni, namun setelah di analisis secara semiotika ditemukan adanya ideologi terselubung yaitu Rasisme dan Amerikanisme.Representasi identitas budaya yang dibangun oleh media ini bisa membantu kelompok dominan untuk melanggengkan ideologinya. Oleh karena itu, para peneliti menyarankan para sineas film bisa lebih berhati-hati dalam membangun makna melalui film mereka, karena film yang ditonton akan memberikan kontribusi kepada penonton atau merendahkan kelas subordinat.

This Thesis is trying to break down the american dominance in film Spanglish. The Film tells the story of immigrants Mexico who worksin American family as a housekeeper. This film is analyzed by a semiotics Barthes to see inequality inside cultural identity of Americans and immigrants. The research used hegemony theory Gramsci and semiotic technique of Roland Barthes's model. In research reflected that there are hegemony on this Columbia pictures Film. In this film, hegemony is not seen, but after it is analyzed by semiotic covert ideology have been found which are Racism and Americanism. The representation of cultural identity that built by media can help to perpetuate its ideology of dominant group. Therefore, the researcher suggestthe filmmakers to be more careful in constructing meaning through their films, since film has contribution to the audience in degrading the subordinate classes."

"This Is England 2006 adalah sebuah film inggris yang mengungkapkan permasalahan terhadap apayang dipercayai orang banyak mengenai cabang kebudayaan skinhead. Film ini sendiri berceritamengenai anak berumur 12 tahun bernama Shaun yang bergabung ke beberapa kelompok skinhead.Tidak seperti film bertema rasis kebanyakan, This Is England 2006 tidak hanya menampilkan satutipe kelompok. Film ini mempermasalahkan kepercayaan tentang seperti apa skinhead itu denganmerepresentasikan dua kelompok yang berbeda dalam cabang kebudayaan tersebut. Dengan melakukananalisis tekstual dan menggunakan beragam kerangka konsep, makalah penelitian ini bertujuan untukmenjawab pertanyaan terhadap apakah identitas cabang kebudayaan skinhead bersifat tunggal, danbagaimana film tersebut merepresentasikan hal ini. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa tidaksemua anggota skinhead berbagi identitas tunggal yang sama, dimana identitas ini biasanya mendapatpengasosiasian dengan stereotip penampilan fisik, tendensi rasis mereka, dan pandangan merekamengenai politik.

This Is England 2006 is a British film that discloses the problematization of what many believe theskinhead subculture is. The film itself tells the story of 12-year-old Shaun who joins several skinheadgroups. Unlike most racism-themed films, This Is England 2006 does not only shows one kind ofgroup. The film problematizes the belief of what skinhead is by representing two different kinds ofgroups within the subculture. By doing textual analysis, and using various conceptual frameworks, thisresearch paper aims to achieve the answer on whether skinhead subculture rsquo;s identity is singular, andhow the movie represents this. The findings of this research show that not all skinhead members sharethe same singular identity, in which identity commonly associated with stereotypical physicalappearances, their racist tendencies, and their views on politics."
