"East Java Province in
Indonesia is the centre of the eastern Indonesia region and it has a fairly
high economic significance, which has contributed 14.85% to the national Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). The role of Large and Medium Scale Manufacturing
Industry (LMSMI) clusters in this province is very important and strategic as
one of the main drivers for economic progress and it becomes a part of the
efforts to improve the society's life. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate
the performance of LMSMI clusters continuously. The purpose of this study is to
investigate the productivity changes of LMSMI clusters in East Java Province,
Indonesia, so that they will be able to survive, grow and compete in facing
global competition. The method used in this study is the method of DEA-based
Malmquist Productivity Index. The result of this study indicates that 50% of
the LMSMI clusters in East Java Province are in the category of improved
productivity, while the remaining clusters are in the category of declining
productivity."

"Literature studies
indicate that information technology (IT) clusters encourage innovation and
increase firm-level productivity by providing external economies and facilitating
joint action for its members. The purpose of this study is to identify the
external economy and joint action factors that affect firm innovation and
productivity in the IT cluster. A research model was developed based on earlier
models of joint action and external economies. The model consists of three external
economy related factors, i.e., access to skills, finance, and infrastructure, as
well as three joint action related factors, i.e., vertical, horizontal, and
research and development (R&D) cooperation as the independent variables,
firm innovation as the intervening variable, the firm?s absorptive capacity as
the moderating variable, and firm productivity as the dependent variable. Data
collection was conducted through a survey with respondents from 32 IT firms
located in three clusters in Bandung and one cluster in Cimahi (West Java ?
Indonesia). The partial least square (PLS) approach was used for hypotheses
testing. The results indicate that horizontal cooperation, access to
infrastructure, and access to skill have a positive impact on productivity,
while horizontal cooperation and R&D cooperation have a positive impact on
innovation. Finally, firm innovation is proven to positively influence firm
productivity."

"Forest destruction in Indonesia has become a very serious problem and global concern. Eco-labels aim to combat illegal logging, illegal trading, and forest conversion. Eco-labeling in the furniture industry is slower in Indonesia than in competing countries such as China and Vietnam, where China has reached more than 1000 Chain of Custody (CoC) certification industrial units and Vietnam 238 units, while Indonesia has achieved only 78 units. But eco-labeling is perceived as a pressure on the international trade of the furniture industry. This study examines how the furniture industry in Central Java and Yogyakarta understands eco-labeling and what efforts the industry is making. Eco-labeling has a positive impact on the industrial environment and sustainable forestry, and it increases credibility/corporate image, market share, and profit. But not all buyers demand eco-labeling, so some companies deal with eco-labeling either by applying for certification or by looking for buyers that do not require the eco-label. Buyers who do not require the eco-label result in companies having less motivation to seek CoC certification. Other views about eco-labeling in the industry are also counterproductive, producing further obstacles to eco-label certification. Eco-labeling is often understood as unfair competition from developed countries, implemented as a barrier to entry into trade, and as inconsistent with The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)/The World Trade Organization (WTO). Eco-labeling is often considered a new form of colonialism rather than an instrument of environmental management."

"A multi model
predictive control and proportional-integral controller switching (MMPCPIS)
approach is proposed to control a nonlinear distillation column. The study was
implemented on a multivariable nonlinear distillation column (Column A). The
setpoint tracking and disturbance rejection performances of the proposed
MMPCPIS were evaluated and compared to a proportional-integral
(PI) controller and the hybrid controller (HC). MMPCPIS developed to overcome the
HC?s limitation when dealing with very large disturbance changes (50%). MMPCPIS provided improvements by 27% and 31%
of the ISE (integral of square error) for feed flow rate and
feed composition disturbance changes, respectively, compared
with the PI controller, and 24% and 54% of the ISE for feed flow rate and feed
composition disturbance
change, respectively, compared with HC."

"Inhibition is one of the
mechanisms used for mitigating the metallic corrosion, particularly in an acid environment. The present work aims to
investigate the
inhibiting effect of N-benzyl-N/-phenyl thiourea (BPTU) on the
corrosion of low carbon steel in a 0.1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution using a Tafel
extrapolation and linear polarization techniques. The study reveals that BPTU
acts as an excellent anodic inhibitor for low carbon steel in a HCl
solution. The protective efficiency of the compound was found to be more than
97% even at higher temperatures. The study demonstrated that BPTU gets adsorbed
on the steel surface, following Temkin?s adsorption isotherm and the inhibition
is controlled by a chemisorption
mechanism. The investigation shows that the results obtained from the Tafel
extrapolation and linear polarization techniques for the corrosion of mild
steel in HCl medium were in good agreement. The influence of temperatures and
concentrations of BPTU on the corrosion of low carbon steel are also
examined in the present work."

"The research aims to scale up a small-scale stirred batch reactor to a large-scale stirred batch reactor in order to degum crude palm oil for use as a raw material in biodiesel production. The scale-up is based on the similarity of fluid Reynolds numbers in the two differently sized reactors. To achieve this aim, computational fluid dynamic modeling and simulations of the two reactors were performed. A small-scale palm oil degumming process was carried out in a 250 cc autoclave reactor using a magnetic stirrer at 500 rpm. The simulation results of this small reactor yielded a fluid Reynolds number in the range of 5 to 3,482. The large-scale reactor proposed in this research is 1.25 m3 in volume and is equipped with two impellers: a pitched blade impeller and a Rushton turbine impeller. The pitched blade impeller is placed over the Rushton turbine impeller. They are rotated at 100 rpm. Under this setting and operation, the resulting fluid Reynolds number was in the range of 486 to 202,000. This result indicates that the large-scale reactor was able to reproduce the reaction performance obtained in the small-scale reactor."

"The relative significance of
the parallel middle body and stern form in the wake formation of single-screw
large ships and their contribution to the ship?s viscous resistance are studied by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A
10450-DWT tanker is considered by varying the ratio of the
parallel-middle-body?s length to the ship?s length (Lmb/L) and by varying the shape of the stern form from a
V-like to a U-like underwater stern transom section. In all the calculations,
the principal dimension and the displacement of the ships are kept constant. A
larger value for the parallel-middle-body relative length (Lmb/L) of ships with the same stern form results in a
larger drag coefficient but does not affect the nominal wake fraction
significantly. A change in the shape of the underwater stern form,
from a V-like to a U-like section, results in a much larger drag coefficient
ascribed to the much larger wake fraction. The stern form dominantly affects
the nominal wake fraction and the ship?s viscous resistance compared to the
parallel-middle-body relative length."

"A mechanical assembly consists of several components to perform an intended function. At the design stage, the intended function must be converted into critical product dimensions. After determining the dimensions, a designer must determine the assembly tolerance and allocate this tolerance to the tolerances of the corresponding components. After determining the optimal tolerances, process selection must be conducted along with production allocation to the selected process. There are three aspects in commercial competition that must be considered by a manufacturing company: cost, quality, and delivery. The aim of this research is to develop an optimization model for process selection for a make to order company to minimize manufacturing cost, quality loss, and lateness cost. The model attempts to determine optimal tolerance and production allocation, which takes into consideration the production capacity and process sequence. Hence, the model attempts to include not only the product design decision, but also to solve the process selection and allocation problems. A numerical example is provided to show the implementation of the model."
