ABSTRACT
Agrarian conflict is one of the quite complicated problem in Indonesia. Previous studies found that the motives behind the agrarian conflict can be catagorized into two major groups: corporations and governments domination against local communities; and economic motives and environmental damage. However, both major studies haven rsquo;t further exploring about the meaning of the land for local communities which causes the emergence of agrarian conflicts. Therefore, this article is intended to explore about the change of meaning to the land through the explanation of cognitive structure formation. The author argues that the meaning is one of the causes of community resistance and conflict. In addition, this article also explains the symbolic opposition by local community as a result of the realization of their meaning in the conflict. This article is written based on a study that uses a qualitative approach with case studies on the development conflict of Kulon Yogyakarta International Airport"
