"A rapid decline of Indonesia's economy during the crisis of 1998-1998, has widely affected the quality of people life, including the declining labour demand, massive lay-offs, and shrinking formal employment. This situation will continue confirming Indonesia as a labour surplus country, due to limited productive working opportunities can be created by slower economic growth against the growing of the entrance in the labour market. This paper which is based on the secondary data mainly SAKERNAS data (1996-2004) from BPS Statistics Indonesia, of the unemployment trends, some issues on unemployment and related aspects, and how the development policies address the challenges of unemployment. The official open unemployment rate has been slowly increasing, even during the economics boom (1995-1996), and continues rising up to about 10% in 2004. The include of open unemployment has ben more pronounced among women, more educated, and in the urban areas. Other issues concerning unemplyment deal with particularly vulnerable groups such as women, youth and migrant workers. Underemployment is more serious concern which is indicated as underutilizing peoples's potential, and the main factor of working poor. Almost half of Indonesia's labourforce has faced big challanges to find way out in reducing the unemployment rate as well as poverty. The employment policy should focus on creating more full productive jobs and priorities the policy and protection for the more vulnerable groups."

"Youth unemployment in Indonesia has continued to remain at a high level relative to other age categories for several years. The case of Indonesia’s youth unemployment is grave with the presence of a low workforce participation rate, informal employment, and higher unemployment rates in young people in comparison with adults. Due to the lack of research on a country-wise view of youth unemployment, this study focuses on providing a much better understanding of the youth unemployment problem in emerging countries, especially Indonesia. The main aim of the paper is to bridge the research gap on youth unemployment with reference to microeconomic determinants, such as educational background and participation in training. This study utilized the August 2019 data of SAKERNAS (Survei Angkatan Kerja Nasional) and analyzed the data using the logistic regression method. Logistic regression is a special econometric model where the dependent variable is considered categorical and dichotomous (binary); in this case, this was unemployed (1) or working (0). The study found that training participation has a negative correlation with youth unemployment, while educational attainment generates mixed results. Young people who have lower education tend to be employed, whereas young people who have completed their higher education yield the opposite outcome.

"This book studies unemployment and inflation in economic crises, first considering the scenario of a demand shock in Europe. In that case, monetary and fiscal interaction would cause widespread oscillations in European unemployment and European inflation. And what is more, there would be equally far-reaching fluctuations in the European money supply and European government purchases. These monetary and fiscal interactions would have no effects on the American economy. Second, it examines the scenario of a supply shock in Europe, in which monetary and fiscal interactions would have no effects on European unemployment or European inflation, there would also be an explosion of European government purchases and an implosion of the European money supply. Monetary and fiscal interactions would produce uniform oscillations in American unemployment and American inflation. Lastly, also see an implosion of both the American money supply and American government purchases."

The youth unemployment rate in Indonesia is the second highest (19,68 percent) among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries in 2018. Indonesian youth unemployment rate in 2018 is almost four times the total unemployment rate. Unemployment has broad effects, for the country, for the unemployed themselves, and also for society. Compared to older unemployed, youth are very vulnerable to the negative effects of unemployment. Unemployment that occurs in parents can cause intergenerational transmission to their children. Parental unemployment can reduce parental investment in their children which leads to a decrease in educational attainment and a decrease in employment prospects as adults. This study aims to investigate the effects of unemployed parents in childhood on youth unemployment using the 2007 and 2014 Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS) data.
The results of multinomial logistic regression indicate that fathers unemployment status in childhood age of youth, only significantly affects the youth unemployment status in the lowest 40 percent income group. Children whose father was unemployed in their childhood age, are more tend to be unemployed at young age instead of being out of the labor force. This shows the existence of intergenerational unemployment transmission in households with low economic group."
