""The world of development thinkers and practitioners is abuzz with a new lexicon: the idea of "the nexus" between water, food, and energy which is intuitively compelling. It promises better integration of multiple sectoral elements, a better transition to greener economies, and sustainable development. However, there appears to be little agreement on its precise meaning, whether it only complements existing environmental governance approaches or how it can be enhanced in national contexts. One current approach to the nexus treats it as a risk and security matter while another treats it within economic rationality addressing externalities across sector. A third perspective acknowledges it as a fundamentally political process requiring negotiation amongst different actors with distinct perceptions, interests, and practices. This perspective highlights the fact that technical solutions for improving coherence within the nexus may have unintended and negative impacts in other policy areas, such as poverty alleviation and education. The Water-Food-Energy Nexus: Power, Politics and Justice lays out the managerial-technical definitions of the nexus and challenges these conceptions by bringing to the forefront the politics of the nexus, around two key dimensions - a dynamic understanding of water-food-energy systems, and a normative positioning around nexus debates, in particular around social justice. The authors argue that a shift in nexus governance is required towards approaches where limits to control are acknowledged, and more reflexive/plural strategies adopted. This book will be of interest to academic researchers, policy makers, and practitioners in the fields of international development studies, environmental politics, and science and technology studies, as well as international relations" -- Back cover."

Food security and sustainable development are major concerns for urban communities due to high urbanization, limited land, and low local food production. Urban farming emerged as a solution with the aim of producing local food, improving nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture on small plots of land. In the context of urban farming, knowledge of farming methods on narrow land is the key to success in cultivating food products. However, the challenge of entering urban farming is considerable as it requires sufficient knowledge and lack of other support systems. Therefore, there is a need for a digital service that provides comprehensive, detailed and structured information on urban farming that can be widely accessed by the public. At first, the author conducted a systematic literature review to find gaps with previous research. The research methodology used is design science research that combines mixed methods consisting of qualitative research and quantitative research. Qualitative research was conducted on 20 interviewees with semi structured using open questions. Then, the results of the qualitative research were analyzed with thematic analysis and were the source of reference for making the digital urban farming service adoption model. In the quantitative research, researchers distributed questionnaires online and obtained 573 respondents. The final result is a digital urban farming service interface design in the form of a high fidelity prototype according to user needs from the perspective of urban farming actors and practitioners in related fields of science obtained through interviews and questionnaires. Analysis and design of the application provides interface design solutions, and will be tested by urban farming actors and the public through expert review, usability testing, and Post Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ). The results of the interface design evaluation show that the design of urban farming digital services can provide satisfaction to users to adopt these services in terms of usability. This research aims to support users to get the information, resources, and support needed in urban farming. Based on the Design Science Research methodology, the prototype incorporates various features, such as education, forum, expert consultation, reminders, assistance, and e-marketplace. This research contributes to promoting and supporting food security with the help of digital platforms in urban environments.

Tanihub is a market place that specifically sells agricultural products. the aim is to break the distribution chain so that consumers can buy food at low prices and farmers still get huge profits. Currently access and market networks are the main problems faced by the majority of farmers in Indonesia in selling agricultural products. Narrow marketing knowledge and low innovation towards modern agriculture have caused farming to be unprofitable. As a result, farmers live in poverty and farming is increasingly abandoned by the younger generation. this if left in the long run will be a threat to food security. Because in the future food is predicted to have a dual role as a source of food and energy raw materials. The purpose of this study was to analyze how the influence of Wages, Land Ownership, Prestige and Tanihub on the interest of generation Y farming in strengthening food security. The sample in this study were 94 members of HMI branch Ciputat. The analysis used in this study is descriptive statistics and ordinal logistic regression analysis. The results of the study revealed that as many as 54 people were interested in developing digital-based agriculture. The results of ordinal logistic regression analysis are known that Tanihub, Prestige and Land Ownership have a significant effect on the interest in farming. Whereas wages do not have a significant effect on the interest of generation Y farming."

The main challenge to urban food security is the public policy perspective that only considers food security from a rural point of view, while urban agriculture is deemed irrelevant. In addressing this challenge, the local government of Depok City has developed a local urban food system program called Sustainable Food Gardens (Pekarangan Pangan Lestari - P2L) in Bojongsari District. The existence of P2L has increased Depok City's food security score by 1.68 over five years, positioning Depok as the 10th highest city in Indonesia for food security index. This research aims to document the characteristics and utilization of P2L in Bojongsari District. The study was conducted through in-depth interviews with 30 people and field observations in 33 P2Ls. Ethnobotanical data was processed by calculating the H’ Index, Jaccard Index, Use Value (UV), and Fidelity Level. The areas of Sustainable Food Gardens (P2L) in Bojongsari District can be found in the villages of Duren Seribu, Duren Mekar, Pondok Petir, and Serua, categorized as moderate and small, and managed by Women Farmers Groups. P2L functions as living granaries, living shops, living pharmacies, nurseries, livestock, and fisheries. A total of 92 species belonging to 86 genera and 47 families were identified in Bojongsari District. These plants have been used by the community in Bojongsari District as sources of medicine, vegetables, spices and seasonings, vitamins, and carbohydrates, at 55%, 17%, 10%, 9%, and 8%, respectively. Additionally, several animals are kept in the P2Ls, such as chickens, goats, and catfish. The diversity index is categorized as high, while the similarity index is low. Each garden has different commodities depending on the preferences of each Women Farmers Group. Based on quantitative study results, it is known that the sUV category is divided into two, low (0.03) and moderate (0.07). There are 78 plant species with a low sUV category. This indicates that most plants' other benefits are not yet known by the Women Farmers Groups. Species with high Fidelity levels or most frequently used for food and medicine by respondents from the study area include Xanthosoma sagittifolium or kimpul, Ipomoea aquaticaor kangkung, Capsicum annuum or cabe, Curcuma longa or kunyit, Zingiber officinale or jahe.

Despite contract farming’s widespread implementation to overcome market constraints and enhance farmers’ livelihoods, its impact on food security remains inadequately investigated and questionable. Moreover, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the impact of contract farming on food security in Indonesia. To address this research gap, this study employs propensity score matching (PSM) to mitigate selection bias in examining the impact of contract farming on the food security of smallholder farm households in Indonesia. It utilizes the 2021 Indonesia Agricultural Integrated Survey (SITASI) data, designed to monitor the indicators of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in the agriculture sector. The food insecurity experience scale (FIES) is used to measure food security. This study shows that contract farming can potentially improve the food security of smallholder farm households in Indonesia. However, it is noteworthy to note that it only benefits certain groups of farmers. Contract farming significantly improves food security of estate crop farmers but does not have a similar effect on the food security of farmers of other commodities. Regionally, the positive impact is most pronounced in North Maluku. Contract farming is also found to benefit only smaller farms, which are the most vulnerable to food insecurity. Positive outcomes are more pronounced for rural farmers, women, and those without land or livestock. These results underscore the role of contract farming in promoting rural development, women empowerment, and poverty alleviation among asset-poor farmers."

"This book provides a contemporary overview of the social-ecological and economic vulnerabilities that produce food and nutrition insecurity in various small island contexts, including both high islands and atolls, from the Pacific to the Caribbean. It examines the historical and contemporary circumstances that have accompanied the shift from subsistence production to the consumption of imported, processed foods and drinks, and the impact of this transition on nutrition and the rise of non-communicable diseases. It also assesses the challenges involved in reversing this trend, and how more effective social and economic policies, agricultural and fisheries strategies, and governance arrangements could promote more resilient and sustainable small island food systems. It offers both theoretical and practical perspectives, and brings together a broad range of policy areas, e.g. agriculture, food, commerce, health, planning and socio-economic policy.
Givenits scope, the book offers a valuable resource for a range of disciplines in a number of regional contexts, and for the growing number of scholars and practitioners working on and in small island states. It will be of particular value as the first book to examine the diversity and commonalities of island states around the globe as they confront issues of food security. "
