"This book aims to present innovative theoretical and empirical approaches that can increase our understanding of this transition. Scholars from the fields of international relations, international political economy, economics and security studies not only explore current theoretical debates on ?power? and ?power shifts? among entities, but also provide fresh insights into relevant aspects of international power in the 21st century. With a particular focus on aspects of international security, trade and production, new methods of identifying power and its sources are presented, and their potential implications and challenges are discussed."

"International order is being remade by new "shapers"--emerging powers that are increasingly assertive in world affairs. Controversies rage about the trajectory of Chinese strategy, the revival of Russian ambitions, the ascent of India, the reconfiguration of Middle East politics, the return of Germany to geopolitics, and the mounting power of Brazil in the Western Hemisphere. Rarely do scholars and commentators think comparatively about the strategic calculations, politics, and impact of these powers in relation to one another and to the United States. What will the shapers do and why? How should the United States respond? What kind of world will they create? The conventional wisdom on national strategy suggests these shaping states have clear central authority, coherently connect means to ends, and focus on their geopolitical environment. The chapters in this edited volume suggest a different conclusion. In seven critically important countries--Brazil, China, Germany, India, Israel, Russia, and Turkey--strategy is dominated by nonstate threats, domestic politics, the powerful and distorting effect of history and national identity, economic development concerns, and the sheer difficulty, in the face of so many powerful internal and external constraints, to pursue an effective national strategy. The United States, in responding to these seven shaper states, must comprehend these sources of strategy."--Provided by publisher."

"This title was first published in 2002. Questioning the most fundamental assumptions of international relations theory, this absorbing work compares and contrasts domestic and international politics regarding the issues of order and disorder taking into account aspects of the two realms which have been neglected by scholarship until now. Challenging the view that there exists a one-to-one correspondence between the absence of a world government and international anarchy and that durable and genuine cooperation among sovereign states becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, under the circumstances, this text is suitable for upper-level undergraduates, graduates and scholars of international relations."

"This book offers a wide-ranging and comprehensive analysis of the growing field of critical security studies. Topics covered include the relationship between security and change, identity, the production of danger, fear and trauma, human insecurity and emancipation. The book explores the meaning and use of these concepts and their relevance to real-life situations ranging from the War on Terror to the Arab Spring, migration, suffering in war, failed states and state-building, and the changing landscape of the international system, with the emergence of a multipolar world and the escalation of global climate change."

Burke, Anthony
"Rarely has security been such a preoccupation of Australian politics, and rarely has it seemed so far from being achieved. This celebrated book argues that security has dominated and distorted Australia's foreign policy and national life, from Cook's first voyage to the Tampa crisis, 9/11 and Iraq. Whether in the Great War, Vietnam or the treatment of asylum seekers, Anthony Burke shows that Australia's security has been bought with the insecurity and suffering of others. Against this corrosive tradition, he offers a new - cosmopolitan and non-coercive - model of national existence and responsibility. At once a deep historical survey and an argument with its society, Fear of Security is a landmark account of how Australia relates to itself, its region and the world. Turning powerful academic and political orthodoxies on their heads, it is essential reading for those concerned with the burning questions that face Australia and the Asia-Pacific."

"Summary: "Governments across the world are concerned about the future of world order. This original, timely and innovative collection is the first to consider the interconnections between energy, capitalism and the future of world order from the angle of critical political economy. In its wide-ranging chapters, the authors analyze these interlocking topics from three closely assoicated perspectives: energy, capitalism and international theory; energy capitalism and the making of world order; and energy and capitalism in the 21st century. The first section includes important examinations of energy and capitalism, the international trade system and the threat of peak oil to liberalism. The second offers pioneering chapters on petroleum and development in the global south, US-Canadian energy relations and the politics of transitioning to a post-carbon era in the age of climate change. Finally, the book concludes by exploring key new and worrying developments such as the revolution in biofuels, the excavation of Canadian tar sands and the rise of hydraulic fracturing"--Back cover."
