Goleman, Daniel
"Drawing on groundbreaking brain and behavioral research, Goleman shows the factors at work when people of high IQ flounder and those of modest IQ do surprisingly well. These factors, which include self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy, add up to a different way of being smart - and they aren't fixed at birth. Although shaped by childhood experience, emotional intelligence can be nurtured and strengthened throughout adulthood - with immediate benefits to our health, our relationships, and our work"

"Emotional Intelligence (EI) has become a topic of vast and growing interest worldwide and is concerned with the ways in which we perceive, identify, understand, and manage emotions. It is an aspect of individual difference that can impact a number of important outcomes throughout a person's lifespan. Yet, until now there were no authoritative books that bridge the gap between scholarly articles on the subject, often published in obscure professional journals, and the kind of books found in the pop-psych sections of most large bookstores. This book fills that gap, addressing the key issues from birth through to old age, including the impact of EI on child development, social relationships, the workplace, and health. It is a useful introduction to the academic study of EI, including its history as a concept."

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a concept that represents individual differences in the ability to integrate cognitive and affective function and use it in daily lives (Salovey & Mayer, 1990; Mayer, Salovey, & Caruso, 2000; 2004). Psychology students, who have studied the science of human behavior and mental activity should have developed their EI from that knowledge. This research investigates the difference on EI between final year students, who have the most experiences in studying psychology, and first year students, who just started learning psychology. The relationship between EI and traits that are related to emotions, namely Extraversion and Neuroticism, is also explored. This study is conducted by using quantitative and qualitative approach (focused interview) which involved 125 students of undergraduate program at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia. Courses in the faculty that the final year students perceive contribute to the development of their EI include courses about emotion as well as courses that guide them to know about themselves and their emotional problems, with reflective learning as the characteristic of the learning process. Interest in the topic of emotion and involvement in emotional situations, such as social situations, differentiate between students with high and low EI. There is a positive and significant relationship between Extraversion personality trait, which indiciates individual’s preference to be involved in social interactions, and students’ EI. There is no relationship between Neuroticism personality trait and students’ EI, and there is no difference between the EI of male and female students. Similar studies in the future can be conducted using longitudinal design, or comparative design involving students from all years of study."

This research studies the difference of emotional intelligence of parents who conduct storytelling and those who do not. Emotional intelligence is the ability to self-motivate and preserve in the midst of frustration, the ability to control impulses and delay satisfaction, regulate moods and able to think under pressure as well as empathy and hope (Goleman, 1996).
The act of storytelling in accordance to the definition within this research is the art of storytelling with the purpose of providing entertainment to a live audience, based on real or imaginary events which may originate from poetry, prose or other sources of oral, written, or recorded sources, and includes body language, vocals, music or images to bring life to the story. The storyteller is involved in verbal and non-verbal expression skills which require the awareness of the storyteller in emotional experience, social skills, empathy, motivation and the ability to control emotion. All these skills relate to the five dimensions of emotional intelligence, which in this research shall be measured by Emotional Intelligence Inventory (Lanawati, 1999).
Approximately 70 (seventy) parents who conduct storytelling and 72 parents (seventy-two) parents that have never participated in storytelling are given an Emotional Intelligence Inventory (Lanawati, 1999). The T-Test results indicate that there is a significance in the score margins (p < 0,01) between the two groups of parents. Thus, there appears that storytelling significantly differentiate the emotional intelligence between parents who conduct storytelling and parents who don?t. Furthermore, in light of the fact that small number research in Indonesia has been conducted on emotional intelligence and storytelling, further studies needs to be conducted on this issue, specifically more comprehensive acts of storytelling.
A practical suggestion is to socialize storytelling to parents that perceive the positive influence storytelling portrays, not only to the parents themselves but also to the children."
