"This book centres on Roger Barlow: merchant, explorer, ally of Sebastian Cabot, supporter of Thomas Cromwells vision for Wales, proponent of expanding English trading routes, and the first Englishman to write a detailed eyewitness account of America (included in A Brief Summe of Geographie). It investigates the early lives of both men and the family-based guild networks that brought Barlow from Colchester to London, Morocco, and on to Seville where Cabot was Pilot Major. There, Barlow joined other English merchants in supporting voyages and supplying Castiles Atlantic settlements. From 1526 to 1528 Barlow joined Cabot in an exploration of the upper reaches of the Rio de la Plata river system, becoming the first Englishman to set foot in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Brazil. When both men returned to the British Isles, Barlow around 1531 and Cabot in 1548, they had trading, navigational, and exploratory knowledge that made them truly unique. In tracing Barlow and Cabots circle from the mid-fifteenth-century Mediterranean to the burgeoning Iberian Atlantic of the sixteenth century, and then back to Reformation England and Wales and to a merchant elite just beginning to look at extending its trading reach into the Atlantic and beyond, the book constitutes a critical contribution to the emerging fields of Atlantic and global history. It examines how shared knowledge as well as the accumulation of capital in international trading networks prior to 1560 influenced emerging ideas of trade, discovery, settlement, colonization, and race in Britain."

"What can the small Mt. Zion methodist church in rural Mississippi teach us about the American dilemma over race? Quite a lot, it turns out. Founded by reconstruction methodists in 1879, Mt. Zion would later endure decades of harsh control by the white supremacist state. Segregated by Jim Crow laws and attitudes, Mt. Zion was also separated from its parent religious body, the Methodist denomination, between 1939 and 1968, as white Methodists created the segregated Central Jurisdiction for its black members: the move appeared as church-mandated Jim Crow. Mt. Zion survived the attacks by the state, and the benign neglect of the Methodists, maintaining its belief in an inclusive society by hosting the civil rights workers of freedom summer, who planned a school for black voters at the church. The church was drawn into the Klan conspiracy that included the murder of the three civil rights workers, the burning of Mt. Zion, and the beating of some of its members. Instead of grieving, the members of Mt. Zion began an annual ceremony that commemorated the death of the three and their mission to advance black rights, especially voting. The commemorative service is now an integral part of state and local efforts to create something new in this very red state, an alternate Mississippi that is inclusive, modern, and open."

This article examines the role of Medgar Evers in the Jackson Movement. The Jackson Movement is a social movement that aims to abolish the Jim Crow law in Mississippi, one of the ways is by boycotting stores that practice segregation and Sit-ins. Several works have discussed this event, but this research provides a new perspective, namely the role of Medgar Evers as a central and prominent figure of the Jackson Movement and a discussion focused on Mississippi. Medgar Evers is a central figure because he is the NAACP Field Secretary in Mississippi as well as frequent coverage in the national media and vocal in response to the Jackson Movement. Medgar Evers' involvement resulted in his death at the hands of white extremists. This research intends to complement existing research on the Civil Rights Movement in 1954-1963. The topic of discussion about Medgar's role in the civil rights movement at that time had not been widely discussed because previous research had generally focused on the civil rights movement on a national scale. Not much is covered from a local point of view, especially Mississippi. The result of the research is that Medgar Evers became a strong figure who kept the Jackson Movement running against Jim Crow and this movement itself became the trigger for the abolition of the segregation law in Mississippi. This study uses the historical method which consists of 4 stages in the form of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation and historiography. The sources used are Medgar Evers' autobiography, newspapers, various books and research journals obtained online."
