This thesis aims to explain China’s increasing assertiveness toward international critics of Xi Jinping’s leadership. China has utilized sports as part of its foreign policy instrument to achieve its national interest. China uses sport as a foreign policy instrument through Ping Pong Diplomacy and Olympic host. However, China gains constant criticism from international society, especially on Human Rights violations. China, under Xi Jinping’s leadership, responds more assertive by not only using the international norm that sports should not be politicized but also followed by follow-up action such as actively seeking apologies. To understand the reasoning behind the increasing assertiveness, this research uses foreign policy analysis with neo-classical realism theory and is conducted qualitatively. This research shows China’s increasing assertiveness because of systemic and domestic factors. Systemic factor influences China's assertiveness through China's increasing strategic rivalry. Furthermore, domestic factors fueled by regime insecurities on China Communist Party legitimacy. Lastly, sport becomes a platform to intensify China’s international response because of its ability to attract international attention and social pride."
