"Masculinities and Culture explores how 'masculinities', or ways of 'being a man', are anchored in time and place; the products of socio-historical and cultural circumstances. It examines the emergence of a masculinity fit for Empire in the mid to late nineteenth century and, by way of contrast, the more recent media-driven, commercial New Man and New Lad masculinity. The author considers some of the media discourses shaping masculinities today, and the formation of specific masculinities in specific settings (such as prisons, hospitals and schools) which both define, and in turn are defined by, strongly held conceptions of acceptable masculine behaviour. He concludes by reviewing a range of ways in which masculinities might by researched, from fieldwork and auto/​biographical and life history approaches through to semiotics and the use of both film and literary texts.
This lively text provides a comprehensive introduction to contemporary debates concerning masculinities as gendered construction, along with the means of researching and theorizing them."

"Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan sisi maskulinitas yang ada dalam iklan cetak minuman vodka berbahasa Rusia. Minuman vodka telah menjadi minuman tradisi khas Rusia, yang erat kaitannya dengan sifat maskulin. Dalam menganalisis iklan minuman vodka ini, teori Pierce, Barthes dan konsep maskulinitas. Dari penggabungan ketiga teori tersebut, dapat dilihat sisi maskulinitas yang dimunculkan dalam iklan cetak minuman vodka berbahasa Rusia.
Metode deskriptif-analisis digunakan dalam menganalisis iklan cetak ini dengan cara mendeskripsikan fakta-fakta secara kontekstual. Dari 12 iklan cetak minuman vodka berbahasa Rusia, dapat disimpulkan sisi atau bentuk maskulinitas yang dipromosikan adalah tampilan fisik yang kuat, pekerja keras, memiliki teman dekat, emosional dengan wanita, kebebasan, kesuksesan, gaya hidup mewah dan status sosial.

The undergraduate thesis is aimed to describe the masculinities side found in Russian Vodka printed advertisement. Vodka is a traditional Russian beverage which is closely related to masculinity. The theories used in analyzing these Russian Vodka printed advertisements are Pierce?s, Barthes? and masculinity concept. From the interrelated analysis of these three theories, the researcher finds that masculinity can be represented in Russian vodka printed advertisements.
Descriptive-analytical methods used in analyzing this print ad by describing the facts contextually. Of the 12 print advertisments Russian vodka, it can be concluded that the side or promoted forms of masculinity is the physical appearance of a strong, hard worker, have close friends, emotionally with women, freedom, success, luxurious life style and social status."

"Walaupun komik pahlawan super sudah ada di Amerika Serikat sejak awal pertengahan abad ke-20, para pahlawan super tersebut baru benar-benar menjadi figur yang signifikan dalam budaya populer di abad ke-21. Hal ini terbantukan oleh dibuatnya film-film berdasarkan tokoh-tokoh tersebut di layar lebar. Salah satu pahlawan super yang paling menonjol adalah Spider-
Man. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) dan Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), secara berurutan, adalah franchise ke-3 dan ke-4 dari film Spider-Man dalam kurun waktu 17 tahun.
Popularitas Spider-Man menjadikannya objek yang menarik untuk diteliti, karena berarti pengaruhnya besar dalam memproduksi dan mereproduksi norma-norma tertentu dalam masyarakat. Artikel ini ditulis dengan tujuan melihat bagaimana film-film tersebut mengikuti atau menolak norma hegemonic masculinity. Dengan menggunakan analisis tekstual dan semiotik, studi ini menemukan bahwa Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) lebih
progresif dalam representasi maskulinitasnya daripada Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017). Hal ini dihubungkan dengan adanya varian yang lebih beragam dalam wacana maskulinitasnya. Studi ini diharapkan dapat mendukung pergerakan yang menginginkan adanya representasi
yang lebih beragam dalam genre film pahlawan super.

Even though American comic book superheroes have existed since the late 1930s, it is in the 21st century that they have become truly prominent icons of popular culture. This rise in
popularity is helped greatly by their adaptation into the big screen. One superhero that stands out is Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
(2018) are the third and fourth respective iterations of the Spider-Man movie franchise within the span of 17 years. Spider-Mans popularity makes it an interesting case study, as it has a
significant influence in producing and reproducing certain societal ideas. This article aims to examine how those movies conform to or resist hegemonic masculinity in their portrayal of the
male lead characters masculinities. Incorporating textual and semiotic analysis, this study has found that Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) represents a more progressive portrayal of masculinity than Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), attributing it to its inclusion of diversity in the discourse of masculinity. This study is intended to come in support of the movement of calling for more diverse representation in the superhero movie genre.
