"Tesis ini membahas interaksi interkultural antara etnik Yahudi dan etnik Cina dalam novel Peony 1948 karya Pearl S. Buck. Interaksi tersebut tidak berjalan secara mulus karena para tokoh memiliki ideologi budaya yang berbeda. Polarisasi kelompok antara tokoh esensialis dan nonesensialis mengawali konflik yang rumit. Interaksi interkultural antartokoh dipenuhi dengan upaya tarik menarik dan pengaruh memengaruhi sehingga muncul kontestasi ideologi budaya. Kontestasi ideologi budaya terlihat dalam perbedaan pemahaman terhadap tanah nenek moyang dan pernikahan campur. Kontestasi ideologi Zionisme dan ideologi budaya yang terbuka dengan asimilasi direpresentasikan oleh Madame Ezra dengan David dan Ezra. Peony, sebagai tokoh utama, memiliki peran penting untuk menentukan pemenang dari kontestasi ideologi budaya yang bergulir. Tesis ini bertujuan menunjukkan pemenang dari kontestasi ideologi budaya adalah asimilasi. Beberapa factor melatarbeklakangi kemenangan asimilasi dalam kontestasi tersebut. Hibriditas juga menjadi salah satu faktor yang menguatkan ideologi budaya yang terbuka dengan asimilasi.

This research discusses about intercultural interaction between two different ethnics, Jews and Chinese, in the novel Peony 1948 by Pearl S. Buck. Instead of simply generating intercultural interaction, it raises an interaction based on different cultural ideology. Group polarization among essentialist and non essentialist opens up complex conflicts. Interactions among the characters of diverse ethnic backgrounds are tinged with efforts to influence, change, and persist in each other rsquo s cultural ideology. Such a process creates the indication of contestation of cultural ideology. It is reflected in each group rsquo s understanding of homeland and mixed marriage.

Contestation between Zionism and assimilation is represented by Madame Ezra, David, and Ezra. Peony, as the main character, has her important role to decide who the winner of the contestation of cultural ideology is. This research aims to reveal the winner of the contestation is assimilation. It perceives many factors are involved to make assimilation wins the contestation. Hybridity is also one of the factors that strengthen the cultural ideology of assimilation to win. "
