"People have dreamed of machines, which would free them from unpleasant, dull, dirty and dangerous tasks and work for them as servants, for centuries if not millennia. Service robots seem to finally let these dreams come true. But where are all these robots that eventually serve us all day long, day for day? A few service robots have entered the market: domestic and professional cleaning robots, lawnmowers, milking robots, or entertainment robots. Some of these robots look more like toys or gadgets rather than real robots. But where is the rest? This is a question, which is asked not only by customers, but also by service providers, care organizations, politicians, and funding agencies. The answer is not very satisfying. Today’s service robots have their problems operating in everyday environments. This is by far more challenging than operating an industrial robot behind a fence. There is a comprehensive list of technical and scientific problems, which still need to be solved. To advance the state of the art in service robotics towards robots, which are capable of operating in an everyday environment, was the major objective of the DESIRE project (Deutsche Service Robotik Initiative – Germany Service Robotics Initiative) funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under grant no. 01IME01A. This book offers a sample of the results achieved in DESIRE."

The development of Robotics technology has grown rapidly lately. The existence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology is one of the factors that drives the development of Robotic besides the growing computational capacity and the reduced costs required to do computing. Robot is a device that can replace humans in doing certain jobs. Artificial Intelligence is used on Robots to be able to do jobs that require intelligence such as detecting weeds based on images from the camera. Deep Learning can be used to provide the ability to extract information from images so that action can be taken based from obtained information. The type of neural network used must have the ability to understand the pattern of the image and be able to localize every object that exists along with the type of object in limited time. One architecture with this capability is Single Shot Detectors (SSD) where consist of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to extract information from images and produce a feature map, Convolutional Layer to localize and classify object within images, and Non-max Suppression to filter not relevant from detected object. As a proof of concept, the SSD architecture will be used for weeds detection in the park. The SSD architecture is used to detect weeds in images along with their position in real-time. In testing, Average Precision score from the model is 44%. The time needed for inference is around 38.99 milliseconds per one image."

Tani, Jun
"How do minds work? In Exploring Robotic Minds: Actions, Symbols, and Consciousness as Self-Organizing Dynamic Phenomena, Professor Jun Tani reviews key experiments within his own pioneering neurorobotics research project aimed at answering this fundamental and fascinating question. The book shows how symbols and concepts representing the world can emerge via deep learning within robots, by using specially designed neural network architectures by which, given iterative interactions between top-down proactive subjective and intentional processes for plotting action, and bottom-up updates of the perceptual reality after action, the robot is able to learn to isolate, to identify, and even to infer salient features of the operational environment, modifying its behavior based on anticipations of both objective and social cues. Through permutations of this experimental model, the book then argues that longstanding questions about the nature of consciousness and freewill can be addressed through an understanding of the dynamic structures within which, in the course of normal operations and in a changing operational environment, necessary top-down/bottom-up interactions arise. Written in clear and accessible language, this book opens a privileged window for a broad audience onto the science of artificial intelligence and the potential for artificial consciousness, threading cognitive neuroscience, dynamic systems theory, robotics, and phenomenology through an elegant series of deceptively simple experiments that build upon one another and ultimately outline the fundamental form of the working mind.
