The dissertation discusses the characterizations of blending product from monomer liquid crystal cholesteryl acrylate and monomer liquid crystal of methylphenylbenzoyl acrylate photopolymerized by UV curing technique. The absorption of blending and photopolymerization products of this work was tested by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Cholesteryl acrylate was synthesized through Steglich esterification reaction between cholesterol with acrylic precursor with catalyst of N, N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) and N, N-dimetilpiridin- 4-amine (DMAP). Monomer liquid crystal of methylphenylbenzoyl acrylate was synthesized by Steglich esterification reaction between acrylic precursors and precursors (S) - (+)-p-hydroxyphenyl-2-methyl butanoat or also known as (S) - (+)-2-HFM. The characterization of monomers was performed by using FTIR, 1HNMR and 13C-NMR for molecular structure; DSC for thermal analysis; POM for textures analysis; and XRD for crsytalinity. FTIR spectrum of the two monomers show typical peaks at 3000-2850 cm-1 for the aliphatic chain vibration, 1720 cm-1 for carbonyl group, and 1600.43 cm-1 for the group of acrylate C=C. The texture of cholesteryl acrylate shows an oily streak at temperature 81.28 ˚C and monomer methylphenylbenzoyl acrylate shows a schlieren texture at 54.36 0C. The blending process of the two monomers was performed by using solvent casting method and photopolymeirzation with UV curing technique by using photoinitiator of 2- hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-propan (HMPP). The molecular weight from the photopolymerization process with the radiation for 15 and 30 minutes Mw give the result of 487.457 and 463.279, respectively. Microstructure from SEM shows a type of side chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCPs). The photopolymerization product characterized by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer for 15 and 30 min of radiation gives wavelength at 363 nm and 350 nm, respectively. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that the blending product of the two monomers absorps a wavelength at ultraviolet A (UVA)."

"We demonstrate, for the first time, the low voltage-driven electromechanical effects in liquid crystal clastomers (LCEs) swollen with low molecular weight liquid crystal (LMWLC). Thin film polydomain (POLY) and monodomain (MONO) LCEs were embedded in a well-known LMWLC, 4-n-pentyl 1-4 cyanobipheny 1 (5CB), and introducted between transparent indium tin oxide electrodes with 100 hm separation. Absorbing 5cb into poly and mono LCEs, shapes changes were obtained in these materials by application of a small voltage. That is, compared to unswollen LCEs, a dramatic-200 times decrease of the critical fields was found for eletromechanical effect in swollen LCEs. The response time when the field was switched on in both poly and mono is below 2s. The result expect the outstanding potential of swollen LCEs as a low powered devices and actuator (e.g artificial muscles)"

"This is a book on the dissipative dynamics of ordered fluids, with a particular focus on liquid crystals. It covers a whole range of different theories, mainly concerned with nematic liquid crystals in both their chiral and nonchiral variants. The authors
begin by giving a detailed account of the molecular origins of orientational order in fluids. They then go on to develop a general framework in which continuum theories for ordered fluids can be phrased."

"This book is a treatise on the thermodynamic and dynamic properties of thin liquid films at solid surfaces and, in particular, their rupture instabilities. For the quantitative study of these phenomena, polymer thin films (sometimes referred to as “ultrathin”) have proven to be an invaluable experimental model system. "
