"Artikel ini menganalisis perdebatan online seputar gender, seksualitas, dan keragaman ras dalam sub-genre high fantasy. High fantasy—sebuah sub-genre fantasi yang berlangsung di sebuah dunia alternatif yang tidak dapat dibandingkan dengan dunia nyata—telah menjadi tema yang cukup populer dalam produksi berbagai film, acara televisi, dan video game di abad kedua puluh satu. Para penulis high fantasy telah menunjukkan representasi gender, seksualitas, dan ras yang semakin setara dalam karya mereka. Akan tetapi, hal itu menyebabkan perbedaan pendapat di antara para penggemar. Beberapa memuji mereka karena menantang representasi yang kurang beragam, sementara penggemar lain berpendapat bahwa itu dilakukan demi mendapatkan uang atau sebagai upaya untuk dipandang benar secara politis—yaitu menjadi sangat berhati-hati agar tidak menyinggung kelompok tertentu dalam masyarakat. This article analyses the many online debates surrounding gender, sexuality, and racial diversity within the high fantasy sub-genre. High fantasy—a sub-genre of fantasy in an alternative world incomparable to the real world— has been a popular theme in the production of various films, television shows, and video games in the twenty-first century. High fantasy writers have increasingly shown an equal representation of gender, sexuality, and race in their works. Still, it has divided fans’ opinions. Some praise them for challenging underrepresentation, while others argue that it is done only for profit or as an attempt to be viewed as politically correct—being very careful not to offend a specific group in society. By using convergence theory and analysing the debates in social media with a research method inspired by digital ethnography, this paper studies the clashing viewpoints between high fantasy fans and their reasonings. This article argues that the online debates are affected by social media users’ values regarding the broader social issues of gender, sexuality, and race."
