The need for speed and accuracy in exchange of information has made information technology to become one of the vital and inseparable parts of the business activity. E-commerce, being one of the forms of information technology application, has become a rapidly growing issue as a solution for enhancing efficiency in conducting business. The existence of choices in applying ecommerce demands a thorough study for comparing the available media. Basically, feasibility of implementing information technology in business is directly proportional with the effectiveness of the technology in fulfilling the need and economical impacts that can be achieved. The purpose of this paper is to study the effectiveness of electronic data interchange (EDI), one form of information technology implementation, in supporting container terminal industry. Product performance method is used for evaluating effectiveness of information technology products/services in fulfilling the needs viewed from the customer interest. Measurement of the economical impact is usually performed using the traditional cost-benefit analysis which is based on ROI (return on investment) model. Application of information economics method introduces a new concept in the evaluation of feasibility of utilizing information technology. The things that are beyond cost-benefit analysis discussion can now be better anticipated by information economics method, such as : value linking, value acceleration, value restructuring and innovation valuation. The object of this study is taken from Kaja Container Terminal (KCT), a company which provides container terminal services and applies EDI for document and information transfer. This study combines product performance and information economics methods for measuring effectiveness of the utilization of EDI at KCT.
