Tesis ini berusaha menjabarkan bagaimana tradisi dan modernitas mengonstruksi identitas tokoh utama novel The Bonesetter's Daughter Karya Amy Tan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode Strukturalisme yang dipadukan dengan pendekatan yang berfokus pada isu identitas, tradisi, dan modernitas. Ruth, tokoh utama novel ini, melewati beberapa tahapan konstruksi identitas. Di setiap tahap tersebut identitas ini diposisikan oleh dirinya sendiri, tokoh lain, dan narator serta teknik narasi yang digunakan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa posisi-posisi identitas yang diambil Ruth di tahapan-tahapan tersebut mencerminkan bahwa ada variasi sikap dalam memandang tradisi dan modernitas.
This thesis attempts to describe the ways in which tradition and modernity affect the identity construction of the main character of the novel The Bonesetter's Daughter by Amy Tan. The method employed in this research is the Structuralist method, which is combined with an approach that focuses on the issues of identity, tradition, and modernity. Ruth, the main character of the novel, undergoes several phases of identity construction. In each phase, her identity is positioned not only by herself, but also by other characters, the narrator, and the narrative techniques used. The results of the analysis show that the identity position assumed in each phase reflects the presence of variations in the attitude towards tradition and modernity.
